There is a condition implied here in the question that has not been entertained and that is causality and time. When we talk about essence and existence then we can't say "existence precedes ..." because the word "precedes" presupposes that time is in "existence". Then the phrase would translate to "time existed before time" which is wrong anyway but also it provides no solution.
The answer hence for me is that where it counts - i.e. with Deity - or with the Root of all causes, Essence and Existence are indistinguishably synonymous terms - only when events occur can we start to separate existence from essence.
So my answer is Existence = Essence, when nothing else exists there is Essence. (Note: the "is" in this sentence = exists)

existence can't = essence because we are born without an identity, personality, rationality, etc.. [not just us personally, but mankind]

Ok this is a different question ... humans are transient beings when I see the words like "Existence" I view them in the absolute sense. Now as per your clarification ...
Our existence was brought about before we knew we existed we were then given essence ... for created beings it would the former of your choices above.

oooh, so instead of just looking at this from birth onwards
we can view it from a religious perspective and it still makes sense...we we brought into existence by God and then given an essence.

i was really confuse when i started reading this topic, i went on browsing and tried to get all about it,, didnt get any exact answer, any body here, who really know, and can explain the same topics...all of the man kind when come in this world he/she know nothing , even his/her par-rants,,, but after than this wold show him/her each and every thing....

Motion of heavanly Bodies is what determines Time.
if all bodies stop moving! we stop experiencing Time

Take for example our own heavenly body they call the third Rock from the Sun!
if the Earth stopped moving totaly dead around its own axis and full stop around the Sun!
No more Day being replaced by Night............
all the clocks will keep ticking but the sun will never set or rise!
No more change of seasons............
will miss the Mango Season :)
No more tides rising and falling...................
No more Winds blowing in familiar patterns........
