I see a lot of ladies wearing these huge exercise belts in my gym. From what it looks like they’re probably made of plastic or rubber. What are they used for? Alternatives to corsets or what? And are they actually effective?

They are worn to protect their backs from breaking or straining when they're working out. It also helps keep their backs straight when they're using weights while doing leg exercises.
Re: Exercise belts
hmm interesting....ive nvr seen women using those because they dont typically need one unless they are body builders and lifting massive amount of weight. I see a lot of guys wearing it though.
Re: Exercise belts
I use put that belt on while doing shoulder press and for squats.
But then I saw most of weight lifters didn't wear them in Olympics.
So I stopped wearing them.
Never had any issues.
Re: Exercise belts
it does not matter whether u wear belts or not...wearing these belts is just for your own personal satisfaction that you wont be hurting your back...but i guess people who are in their advance level of work out..doesnt really wear them..becuz in advance level, they're very much used to their bodies and their back kinds of adapts when they lift heavy...
Re: Exercise belts
more kind of body wraps in home. belts were made for back support not for tummy tuck in. :>

same here
Re: Exercise belts
I have never seen a lady with it. I do have a weak back that strains easily I wonder if I should start wearing them:hmmm:
Instead of exercise belts, the gloves (hand gloves - full gloves and/or partial gloves with finger part of the glove cut off) is a good investment. You will be able to 'do more' of the same set/rep, lift a bit more heavily with leather support. Some dumb bells are designed in a way that your skin will get abrasive after a while without glove use, and it will be painful to break that ceiling without the use of it.
A different idea for another thread. But belts are what everyone mentioned above. Belts can also cause you to look slimmer for an hour or so. Tummy tucks in nice and neat. :>
