"Excuse"

I’ve got a jury summons in the mail today and I do not want to go. Has anyone ever made up an excuse that worked, if so please share it with me.

Re: "Excuse"

I don't think you can make up an excuse. It's pretty much mandatory.

Re: "Excuse"

pretend that you wear a niqab and if you're lucky you may not get selected to be on the jury....

Re: "Excuse"

It's your duty as a citizen to serve, don't be wanker.

Re: "Excuse"

tell'em U hate Whitey

Re: "Excuse"

Majestic, in all honesty you should go and its a learning experience. You can always have yourself ruled out in the initial stage by showing strong opinions about an issue.

Re: "Excuse"

Tell 'em you are from Yemen.

Re: "Excuse"

Poor baby, my jury duty experience was a complete nightmare. It lasted a week and it seemed like years.

As you can tell my excuse didn't work.

Who would have thought there were people out there who believe if you have a gun, take out gun, point gun at someone and actually pull the trigger, that it is not REALLY aggravated assault because "well, he missed, right?". Oh yeah, they also believe that if you have no job, are out at 3am, tested high for a number of illegal drugs, etc etc that it is reasonable for you to carry a gun, after all in the section of town this happened in, well, it's dangerous.

5 others and myself were ready to committ murder, finally the judge declared a hung jury and we escaped pergatory.

Cheers!

Re: "Excuse"

Tell them that you are a full time student or you can't speak English.

Re: "Excuse"

There should be instructions on the forms they sent you that explain what they see as valid excuses. If youre the primary caregiver for children or elderly and have no one to fill in for you. If you have a handicap or health issue that would prevent you from serving - and for this one, you need to provide documentation, names and numbers of doctors etc. I think thats about it. And if you're the primary caregiver and they accept this excuse, its only a temporary repreive - you usually get one year and then a new summons. You can postpone your service twice and then you just have to go.

Re: "Excuse"

What is jury summons?

Does that mean that they just pick any random person and ask them to sit in a jury for a lawsuit?

Re: "Excuse"

In any case that requires a jury, jurors are picked out of a pool of people chosen at random from Dept of Motor Vehicle registration and Voter registrations. If you have a drivers license or are registered to vote in this country, you can expect to get a summons to serve on a jury at some point in your life.

Typically, when you get a summons to serve, you have to call a certain phone number for 3 days to see whether you will be asked to report to the court. If they need people, you have to go. If they have enough people during those 3 days, then you will be removed from the potential juror pool for 5 years. If you are called in to the courts, you'll sit in a room full of people. When a judge calls for a jury, you're all trooped in to the courtroom and lawyers from both sides start asking questions. Each side is allowed a certain number of juror refusals as they choose which people to put on their jury. So you can, in theory, get out of jury duty by giving bad answers to the questions they ask.

so thats jury duty in the us of a.

Re: "Excuse"

I have been there 2twice but did not get called in. Had all day off from work.

If you working u will get paid and no excuse will work unless u got a dr who can say u were not well...

Re: “Excuse”

Thanks for the explanation Mamaof3. Does that mean non-US nationals who hold a US driving license and live in the US could also be called for that jury duty? And what about Americans living abroad?
