Reminds me of Ishtiaq Ahmed. Four jasoosi novels per month. Holy cow.
Re: Excessive writing makes writer unpopular?
It rather depends on the reason for the excessive writing. If the excessive writing is consistent and in keeping with their style and charisma, I don't think it makes writers unpopular. However, if the excessive writing is fueled by writing simply for the sake of having a published "follow up" to previous works, the author may become unpopular as works written for this reason tend to be lacklustre and lack much of the charisma of earlier works. There is also a slightly artificial feel to them.
Re: Excessive writing makes writer unpopular?
But then an author could be criticized for being a one-hit wonder. I do think it's sort of a risk to write a sequel or a trilogy, etc. the subsequent books tend not to be as good as the first novel. Roald Dahl comes to mind, lol. He wrote many books, most of them in the fantasy genre, but the writing style was consistent and the plots weren't redundant.
Re: Excessive writing makes writer unpopular?
in most cases yes but there are some exceptions...for example KK Rowlings is one of them.
Re: Excessive writing makes writer unpopular?
I tried to get into Harry Potter. Got the book and couldn't even get a quarter of the way through. Not a Lord of the Rings fan either. However I recently finished a fantasy novel called The Witch's Daughter, which I liked. Don't usually gravitate to fantasy, but it depends on what kind.
Re: Excessive writing makes writer unpopular?
What about Farhat Abbas Shah? He used to write thok ke bhao.. every year 2-3 majmooa kalaam ![]()
Re: Excessive writing makes writer unpopular?
There are these two popular digest writers in Pakistan ‘Umera Ahmed’ and ‘Faiza Iftikhar’, now known to people because of their dramas. They got ability to churn a serial every 3 months and if you google their books, they both must be near half century. I haven’t gone through their books except for few of Umera Ahmed, but from the TV serials they adapted from their own novels, it seems that they have nothing new to say every time. But, when you visit a book fair, you will find many stalls displaying their books on front ![]()
BTW, have you ever heard that there are only 36 topics in the world that form basis of a story?
Re: Excessive writing makes writer unpopular?
One-hit wonder… Arundhati Roy? ![]()
I think people are credited / known for one of their work, irrespective how much they write. On other hand, there is a tendency of repetition in most of the writers.
Bano Qudsia wrote so many dramas, short stories and novels. But When people discuss about her. Its her novel ‘Raja Gidh’ that is considered her best work. Same is the case with Quratulain Haider, who is known for her novel ‘Aag ka Darya’. Paulo Cohello will be known for ‘Alchemist’.

Who is he?
Re: Excessive writing makes writer unpopular?
Okay is she the one who wrote God of Small Things, which the drama Talkiyan was based upon? If, so I skimmed through that book. The drama looked more interesting but youtube didn’t have all the episodes. There have been several Indisn novels that have kept me hooked from start to finish, but this was not one of them.

Re: Excessive writing makes writer unpopular?
Would you call this ‘excessive’?
Barbara Cartland bibliography - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
she wrote more than 700 and sold around a billion books.
Re: Excessive writing makes writer unpopular?
If popularity is measured in commercial terms, then Umera Ahmed and likes are most popular writers of Pakistan.
In Barbra's case, there can be many questions like:
'did she give quality writings to her readers'?
has her books impacted (positively / negatively) the society as a whole?
last but not the least, 'uski shadi ho gai thi?' :D
Re: Excessive writing makes writer unpopular?
^ how do you measure popularity?
A lot of critically acclaimed books and movies (quality) have not been popular (best sellers or box office hits). If you are looking for that, better change the title of this thread :P
As far as Barbra is concerned, not only she got married (twice) ... uss ka apnay Lord Mountbatten ke sath chakker bhi tha ;)
Re: Excessive writing makes writer unpopular?
wah Barbara justifies the affair between Nehru uncle and Advina aunty.
I think there is no single measurement and absolute way to determine a writer’s popularity. May be a time test (say after 100 years), whose work remain relevant and attract readership can be count exact popularity, but again Shakespeare is popular though he wrote a lot.
