What causes some people to be so addicted shopping?
Have you seen any instances where this resulted in relationship problems, what were the reasons?
How can such relationship problems be solved, seen any success story?

Re: Excessive Shopping
Yes. A close friend of mine is going through this problem. Girl is an excessive shopper. Husband cant take it any longer. He tries to stop his wife from buying every latest thing but she doesnt listen. She comes from a very rich background and has never seen the tough life, whereas he is a well earning engineer (but not as highly paid as girl’s dad). He tells her to get a job so that she can keep up her lifestyle but she refused. needless to say this is straining their marriage.
what causes it: it can be a form of escape from loneliness and problems. having a healthy flow of money or excessive money.
Re: Excessive Shopping
I can see how one can be addicted to shopping.
its a slippery slope.
Re: Excessive Shopping
I’ve seen both husband and wife do this..
With the husband buying a flash car beyond his means..
With the wife buying designer clothes, makeup, styling etc
A lot of people have this idea that it’s usually women who are guilty of excessive spending but I think it can happen just as much with men… I see so many young guys who can’t afford to move out of their parents’ house but are bragging they’ve bought an expensive car lol.. it goes* both* ways..
Re: Excessive Shopping
I can be a shopoholic…and The more I browse online..Pintrest, online sales, deals, fashion magazine, twitter updates on fashion for men etc…the more I am tempted to buy. its all impulse usually. But, so far i keep it within means. but buying things I already have is addiction in my view.
Re: Excessive Shopping
I buy stuff I already have but I don’t see it as an addiction.. I just think to myself I can wear the other(s) on diff days or when the one I want is in the wash..
I’d only class it as a problem if it interferes in my daily life or I can’t really afford it..
Re: Excessive Shopping
Hmmm…I don’t think I’m much of a shopper. Once in a while if i really really like something at first sight and can’t shake it off ..I’ll splurge a bit. But usually I tend to give it more thought…do I really need it… is it worth it…Can i get it at a better deal from elsewhere or at a later point, etc. But to answer the thread’s question? i think there could be several reasons behind excessive shopping. It can be done to fill some void in a person’s life…or maybe it stems from an insecurity where self worth is determined by material things. And some people take it far where they can’t be seen in the same clothes twice, lol. Desire to stand out or seek approval. Stress relief aka retail therapy, etc.
Re: Excessive Shopping
Shopping addiction isn’t any different from any other addiction…alcohol, food, porn, drugs etc. Often people do it b/c of the “high” they get from it…the rush of endorphins. Many do it b/c they’re lonely, depressed, feel some type of void in their life, stress relief etc. Of course, there are people who do it b/c they had access to money to buy whatever they want while growing up and parents never said “no” so they don’t know how to control themselves.
I know a few women that shop A LOT but they also make good money and can afford it so it doesn’t cause issues in their marriage.
Re: Excessive Shopping
I’m an excess shopper and don’t think of it as a problem. For me, it’s more of an interest and hobby. Some people are into sports and will spend their money there, some into food, some into technology, etc. I’m really into fashion (clothes, shoes, makeup, jewelry) spend a lot of time reading fashion magazines/blogs/websites and that drives me to shop.
As long as you can fund your shopping and not go into debt, I don’t see why it should be a problem.
Re: Excessive Shopping
I used to be an excess shopper and then I ran out of space. Now I barely buy anything for myself
Re: Excessive Shopping
it depends. what you term as addictive might just be a normal standard thing for the other. people belonging to high socio-economic groups might buy designer clothes every week and that is considered a normal thing for them, but this might be seen as excessive shopping to an average person.
talking about myself, whenever i am really stressed out, shopping does wonders to me.
