Excercising while pregnant

Hello
I’m in my first trimester right now and i am wondering what are some good excercises to do. The doctor diagnosed me with gestational diabetes so i have to keep a tight control on my sugar levels, also I am not allowed to gain more htan 15 lbs.

I really want to get in shape after I have a baby, I believe that the fitter you are when you get pregnant, the easier recovery is…however I was alwyas overweight (guess all that procrastination that ill start working out soon bit me in the butt!) so i can’t exactly “start” getting into better shape now…or can I?

I walk alot during my daily routine (to the busstop, in the neighborhood etc) however I am also looking for some strengthening exercises to do to tone up the rest of my body (if it’s still possible to do so at this stage). I’ve been told swimming is an option however that’s not feasible for me. Any other tips to get healthy? My diet is okay, it can be better…but its simply a matter of discipline rather than being educated.

Thanks.

It's best to focus on non-impact exercise, and also exercises where you are less likely to fall---remember that you're center of gravity is going to start changing pretty quickly and it will throw you off balance more than usual! I'm also in my first trimester and have hardly had the energy to exercise, but when I have I have used the elliptical machine at my gym and that was great. Just make sure you keep your heartbeat under 140 beats per minute----if you go above that, you'll be increasing your baby's heartbeat as well as will start getting into the anaerobic zone where your body will have a more difficult time supplying oxygen to your baby.

As for strengthening, it's a good time to start firming up your arms and shoulders (you'll be doing a lot of carrying 7 months from now!). I have read that some abdominal exercises can be helpful for making labor easier, but get info on this from a professional, reliable source as you also don't want to do anything that's going to put undue stress or possibly cause trauma in your abdominal region.

Good luck, and congratulations!

Re: Excercising while pregnant

I have always been active before I got pregnant but I was also underweight. Now I am 9 months and have gained 40 pounds. I look in the mirror and cannot recognize myself lol but I am hoping to hit the gym and lose all this mommy fat as soon as I can i'A.

During pregnancy, I was told that yoga and kiegel exercises are great. Walking and aerobics are also a great form of exercise especially if they diagnosed you with gestational diabetes. But how can you not gain more than 15 pounds? Are you overweight?
