Examples please...

:salam:

Can someone please help me understand the difference between Normative and Positive statement? put some examples too in your replies. :@:

Re: Examples please…

Is this for Economics / Poli Sci / Philosophy?

At the outset:

Positive statements are those that describe reality in someone’s view - these “facts” may or may not be true though.

Normative statements are those that describe how things ought to be in someone’s view… what is right/wrong desirable/undesirable etc.

Political Scientists and Economists contrast between these because if two people disagree on normative aspects, then there can be some room for dialogue and compromise, while such an undertaking gets more difficult if people’s disagreement is over positive aspects of reality.

I’m sure you’ll find much more online along with some good examples… from my undergrad days, I remember the “Moon is made of cheese” as an example of a positive statement, and “The World would be a better place if the moon were made of cheese” as a normative statement.
:hehe:

Hope this helps.
