He last played in a Totesport League game against Somerset in May 2005.

Butt made his Scotland debut against Yorkshire in 1998 having settled in Edinburgh in the 1990s, after a first-class career playing for Lahore City, Lahore City Blues and Pakistan Railways. He played in all five of Scotland’s matches at the 1999 World Cup in England - the only one-day caps he won - and returned figures of 1-21 off 10 overs against Australia at New Road.

Butt impressed the selectors in early 1999 and was included by Director of Cricket Jim Love in his squad for Scotland’s inaugural appearance in the ICC Cricket World Cup in England in 1999. Thereafter he further found favour with the selectors in the following years, and twice took five wickets for Scotland. 6-42 in the first innings against the MCC at Lord’s in August 2000, and 5-47 in the second innings against Ireland four years later at Clontarf, Dublin, having already taken 4-25 in the first innings.

The following month he was hit with a one-year ban by the England and Wales Cricket Board and never played again for his adopted country for pinch-hitting batsman. For Scotland, he scored only 320 runs, but these included 35 boundaries, including 15 sixes, some of which certainly left the ground! And his strike rate was an impressive 69.13 per 100 balls.

The Scottish seam bowler, Asim Butt, has been banned from all forms of cricket for a year, after testing positive for the recreational drug, Ecstasy.

Butt, 37, appeared before an England & Wales Cricket Board disciplinary panel on Wednesday, having been caught out during Scotland’s totesport League match against Somerset on May 11. He will now miss the ICC Trophy in Ireland next month, a competition that could enable Scotland to qualify for the 2007 World Cup.

“Asim has let himself down along with his family, his team-mates and Scottish cricket as a whole,” said Roddy Smith, the chief executive of Cricket Scotland, as Butt became the third cricketer in nine months to fail a drugs test. The Warwickshire pair of Graeme Wagg (cocaine) and Keith Piper (cannabis) were both sacked by their counties for their offences.

“He accepts he made a grave error of judgment,” added Smith. "Asim has undoubtedly been one of the best seam bowlers in the Scottish game in recent seasons and has represented his adopted country with pride and skill. He has led the way for many Scottish Asians to follow his lead and play for their country. Up to this point, Asim’s disciplinary and conduct record has been exemplary.

“All Scotland players are fully aware of the ECB’s drugs policy and know the consequences if they take a banned substance. Cricket Scotland fully supports the ECB’s anti-doping regulations and will do everything in its power to support and ensure drug-free sport.”
