LAHORE: Former Scotland paceman Asim Butt has died in his sleep at the age of 42 in his birthplace of Lahore - where he was born in 1967. He last played in a Totesport League game against Somerset in May 2005.
Butt made his Scotland debut against Yorkshire in 1998 having settled in Edinburgh in the 1990s, after a first-class career playing for Lahore City, Lahore City Blues and Pakistan Railways. He played in all five of Scotland’s matches at the 1999 World Cup in England - the only one-day caps he won - and returned figures of 1-21 off 10 overs against Australia at New Road.
Butt impressed the selectors in early 1999 and was included by Director of Cricket Jim Love in his squad for Scotland’s inaugural appearance in the ICC Cricket World Cup in England in 1999. Thereafter he further found favour with the selectors in the following years, and twice took five wickets for Scotland. 6-42 in the first innings against the MCC at Lord’s in August 2000, and 5-47 in the second innings against Ireland four years later at Clontarf, Dublin, having already taken 4-25 in the first innings.
The following month he was hit with a one-year ban by the England and Wales Cricket Board and never played again for his adopted country for pinch-hitting batsman. For Scotland, he scored only 320 runs, but these included 35 boundaries, including 15 sixes, some of which certainly left the ground! And his strike rate was an impressive 69.13 per 100 balls.
