If they mean to write the "range of operation in open space" then the writer/author should do his own research and write accordingly instead plainly believing in what is trashed out to him ...... A Walkie Talkie can only be traced while the conversation is going on coz its a point to point connection .....
But then u can trace down any walkie talkie coz when operating it causes Radio Waves which are traceable if u've the will and means to do so ..... u may not end up deciphering the conversation but yet u can record it and quite accurately pin point the areas from where it took place
To Plainly say it can't be traced is stupid
BTW with round about 1000$ and some basic knowledge in Linux and GSM/UMTS/3G Networking u can eavesdrop on any Mobile Telephone Network operating GSM/UMTS/3G ...... And the best part of it ..... all the stuff (hardware/Software) is available legally

Well detecting a signal and thus its possible origin is one thing which should be possible for Pak-Fauj … decoding the content is a different matter altogether … If they atleast could publish this very detail to socalled journalists then even the most dumb of the lot would understand who is able to provide such sophisticated equipment …
I don’t buy into the theory that Pak-Fauj doesn’t even have Wide range scanners which are able to atleast detect the signal and record it on a HDD … but oh well
