Electric Thinking Caps!!!

A new era of high voltage learning is what we are looking at guys. You wear the cap, you get a few electric shocks ( which you don’t even notice ) and voila! You are learning faster!! :aisha:

Simulating the brain by means of electrical simulation is what the scientists have tried to do here. Electricity was fired into the area of their brains that governs movement — running from the front of the head to a point above their ear — for 10 minutes while they completed the task. By running the charge in one direction, researchers found they could stimulate the brain and increase the volunteers’ learning speed by 10 per cent!!

“As it becomes more fashionable to use some types of drugs for cognitive enhancement, this method seems to be a good, safe, and attractive alternative,” Cohen Kadosh said.

I personally think its really cool! At the moment, it targets the movement area of the brain - helping only activities related to motion like rowing a boat or solving a puzzle. But the thought of it being able to help people with language and education and vision is amazing.

Re: Everyone get your thinking caps on..

:hmmm: Interesting!

Re: Everyone get your thinking caps on..

That does sound interesting, but lets say it does become available in the market and only certain people can afford it would it be fair to those who don't have this advantage? It would be beneficial for those who may have some sort of learning disabilities.

Re: Everyone get your thinking caps on..

It somehow seems pretty much the same as Electroconvulsive therape used by Psychiatrists. But that doesn't come without adverse effects. Stimulating the brain's specific areas can prove to be slightly tough and a damage to any of the connections of other pathways could damage some other area such as balance, equilibrium, hearing, vision and so much more.

But still sounds very interesting.

Re: Everyone get your thinking caps on..

i can imagine more cons than pros for this one.

Re: Everyone get your thinking caps on..

Its a pair of rubber pads that are strapped to a head and attached to a battery, and it states that these head sets could be manufactured so that people could receive the treatment in clinics or even at home. So I'm thinking this wouldn't be VERY expensive. But still technology comes with a good price.

Hmmm. I think they are a bit different. ECT is basically used to induce a therapeutic seizure and the patients are anesthetized. It is normally used for treatment of severe depression, when the patient doesn't respond to any other kind of treatment. And after treatment, drugs therapy is continued too.
On the other hand, these thinking caps are just used to increase the learning ability for a certain amount of time. The adverse effects phenomenon is massive for ECT but currently this technology is considered safe. Although I do agree with your say about it damaging other pathways.

I can think of so many pros B!! Brain Simulation can be so massive. From helping people with their learning abilities ( problems of vision, speech etc) to reviving patients who have brain related disorders - like stroke victims!

You just fell in love with me all over again, didn’t you? :sid:

Re: Everyone get your thinking caps on..

Agreed, that's what I was thinking too.
