No this not a spinoff of Everybody Hates Chris ![]()
What Afridi did was totally unacceptable and no one can argue with that. He has no explanation and no justification. And because of his actions he has recieved much flak from media and public alike, especially those supporting the opposition. He has let himself down and also his team, captain, coach and country. If pakistan go on to win this series, it will be deemed one of the less deserved victories even though the rest of the team worked really hard. On the world stage he is representing Pakistan. Pakistanis already have a really bad image when it comes to work/sports ethics and he has just helped worsen it.
Although the offence was quite severe, his punishment has been pretty mild. I was expecting (not hoping) something more serious.
All of the above said and done, i would urge everybody to not just shun him off as an outcast all of a sudden. We all have our insane moments and rushes of blood. In the heat of the moment (especially when competition is tough) we do things we wouldnt do otherwise. Atleast he had the decency to openly accept his mistake and apologise to everybody. Unlike Shane Warne, for example, who took steroids and made up a story that it was medicine his mother gave him.
In about 9-10 years that we have enjoyed watching him, this is the first time he has propelled himself into such controversy. Thats quite a decent track record i’d say. So now that we’re all done ranting about him let us also take some time to remember the good things he’s done for the pakistan team and cricket in general.
One thing that comes to mind is he has no doubt helped popularize cricket in pakistan and around the world. People come to watch him play and end up watching the whole game. They go to live matches to watch him in action. His batting alone has made people grab their seats even in TEST cricket! Who would have ever thought of that? He might not be as consistent as other aggressive batsmen (Sehwag, Gilchrist) but he definitely is the most explosive.
All of you, think of something good that he’s done for us and cricket and post it here. Could be anything outside cricket too.
Sincerely,
Captain Lota
