Everest expeditions

I was watching Discovery Channel last nite abt an Everest expedition thats been going on for a while. Something started to really annoy me here.

These people get all kinds of fancy equipment, tents, food, communications devices, all the bling-bling they can. They train and train then they spend thousands and thousands to “conquer everest”. They are treated like big sports heros.

Now here’s the thing. The success or failure of their big expedition relies on the Sherpas. They go scrambling up and down the mountain, setting up all the camps for these people, “fixing ropes” and ladders, supplying all the camps.

All the programs on everest expeditions just mention “sherpas” in passing. Meanwhile, the entire life history of “the climbers” is gone over, they are the ones being filmed, they are the ones treated like heros. But all they need to do is hang on to the ropes fixed there by the sherpas.

Dont you find this annoying???

Re: Everest expeditions

I absolutely agree mamaof3!
It's really sad and pathetic. The sherpas are natural mountaineers and climbers, they are made for the task and they can "conquer" the Everest much more easily than the visiting conquerers and yet they are sidelined most of the time. Even Sherpa Tenzing remained a side hero. He was lucky to be recognized at all I guess, but it has to be realized that without Sherpa Tenzing Norgay's natural abilities and assistance, Edmund Hillary may never had made it. These short tough mountain men deserve much more respect, recognition and support in this area.
