BBQ DAYS @ THE ISLAMIC CENTRE OF YORK REGION
Each Sunday through the Summer months, the Islamic Centre of York region will be hosting BBQ days. Bring Halal Hamburgers, Halal Hot Dogs, Halal Chicken and share with fellow Muslims in an entirely Islamic environment. The programme starts with Zuhr Salat at 1:30 pm.

Details of the project:
-Free tutoring services offered to at-risk elementary school students in a
GTA housing project from September to June.
-Introduced by MSA Community Affairs to assist those who are needy in the surrounding community by providing one-on-one attention with tutors, who will serve as both role models and mentors in the community.
-An excellent opportunity for Muslims to initiate a project which will
directly affect the community. Please do not let this opportunity pass you by. If there is an insufficient response, we will have to invite other
student groups to volunteer their members instead.

BREAKING THE SILENCE
Friday, September 20, 2002 - Saturday, September 21, 2002

(TORONTO, ON) — The Muslim Students’ Association at the University of Toronto , and the Canadian Alliance for Palestine are presenting two FREE events on the St. George Campus, University of Toronto, aimed at providing the public with information about Palestine’s history, culture, and people.

September 20th, 2002: Between 10:00am and 5:00p.m in the Stone Lobby (Ground Floor) of the Medical Sciences Building, 1 King’s College Circle.

Displays of Palestinian art, culture, poetry readings and documentaries
September 21st, 2002: 7:00pm – 10:00pm, in the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) Auditorium (Ground Floor), 252 Bloor Street West.

Details of the events are given below:

SEPTEMBER 20TH, 2002 10:00AM – 5:00PM.
1. Palestinian Art and Poetry:

1.1. Visual Art: A collection of paintings, drawings, cartoons, documentation of conceptual and installation art, work with local materials, various forms of children’s art, and photography. Included are articles and reviews of certain artwork as well as artists’ biographies. Topics include the design and history of Al-Aqsa mosque. All this will be presented in a variety of wall work displays in addition to slide show presentations and reproductions.

1.2. Portfolios/Booklets: Various essays, short stories, and articles regarding the plight of the artists and poets of Palestine, as well as reviews and historical contexts of their work, will be displayed.

1.3. “100 SHAHEED, 100 LIVES” – A memorial exhibition that showcases personal photographs and objects belonging to the first 100 people to die in the Aqsa Intifada beginning on September 28, 2000.

1.4. Poetry Reading: Students and volunteers will read poems by Palestinian poets and some original poems on Palestine. Anasheed (Arabic hymns) will also be part of the program.

2. Photo gallery
Special collection of photographs on the daily lives of the Palestinian people.

3. Documentaries
During the event, documentaries pertaining to the history and people of Palestine will be played.

4. Culture:
A showcase of Palestinian traditional dresses, tapestry, music and ethnic food.

SEPTEMBER 21ST, 2002 7:00PM – 10:30PM
1. Palestinian art displays, photo gallery, culture displays (as above).

  1. Panel of Speakers: Dr. Ismail Zayid: President, Canada Palestine Association Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine Dalhousie University & Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia Topic: The historical aspect of Palestine and the Zionist movement.
