I remember there were threads on Shor Sharaba about Evanescence when they made it to the showbiz scene. I was wondering how many of you have actually bought/listened to Evanescence’s album ‘Fallen’?
Frankly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I bought this album. I knew there would be a lot of rock, but I didn’t know what else. I just thought, I love “Bring Me To Life” song (soundtrack of Daredevil movie), so why not get the album?’ Amy Lee (vocals), Rocky Gray (Drums), Ben Moody (lead guitar) and John LeCompt (guitar) put a lot of work into this album, but would it be worth my money?
The album starts with “Going Under”, a heavy rock tune, and a good start to the album. Amy screaming the chorus is the best part. Next is “Bring Me To Life” - everyone knows it, you’ve heard it, and it is amazing rock, certainly one of the album’s highlights.
The next track is “Everybody’s Fool”. I find this song boring, mainly because it doesn’t seem to go anywhere. Following that is “My Immortal”, the first ballad of the album, and it’s a very beautiful and emotional one. Amy’s voice isn’t her strongest on here though.
“Haunted”, up next, IS haunted. There’s no other way to describe it. It has a very spine-tingling tune, and low, menacing vocals. This is my current favourite, mainly because of the vocals. Amy describes what’s happening during the verses, then lets out a determined siren for the chorus. Also, near the end, a choir joins in, making it sound ghostly. Fantastic.
“Tourniquet” comes up next, and is a good song, but not the best. It has a very strong sound, and the vocals sound like a cry for help. The same goes for “Imaginary”, which is quite a spooky song with an imaginary tinge (there are no other words).
“Taking Over Me” and “Hello” are probably my two least favourite songs. “Taking Over Me” manages to sound like a bad version of “Bring Me To Life”, while “Hello” (a ballad) is like “Everybody’s Fool” - it just doesn’t seem to go anywhere.
Towards the end we have “My Last Breath”, one of the highlights of the album with its techno/rock sound and its powerful vocals. The final track is “Whisper”, which is also quite good and a perfect end to the album.
“Fallen” surprised me a little. It’s dark, dramatic and hard rock. It’s a great album altogether, but loses a mark because some of the songs sound a little similar, and they often talk about death. Plus, Evanescence have given a lil bit touch of Linkin Park music style. However, that aside, it’s an excellent effort from them.
