etihad or PIA - current status?

ok i know this q might have been asked like a gazillion times…but most of the comments on this topic are an year or two old..

so i wanted some current suggestions based on recent experiences about travelling on which airlines wud be more comfortable/enjoyable? etihad or PIA…for a toronto to karachi trip…

the thing is…i have always wanted to travel by PIA..since i just feel it wud be like entering pakistan right from the flight itself..and seeing pakistani air hostess and maybe even hearing urdu in announcement wud be very nice… yet again, i hear all sorts of mixed reviews abt PIA..how they just play the same movie on the plane..how the air hostess are hostile at times…how kids keep crying..yet some reviews are pretty good…how u can watch old dramas ont he flight… etc..

on the other hand, etihad is another airlines that i m curiosu to travel in.. cuz it seems to be progressing a lot..most fo the people who travel on it are full of praises…abt how its service is amazing its comfortable clean food is good… etc..

so i just wanted suggestions on wht i shud go for…see when i travel in a plane, firstly i want good entertainment and comfortable seating..so good variety of desi channels..then i want good service and clean toilets…and the food shud ofcourse be good too…

so how is PIA’s current service? and which one shud i go for?? etihad or PIA?

Re: etihad or PIA - current status?

**its like comparing apples with kaddu...PIA sux...ittihad is much better but at the end of the day not comparable to any western airlines. again, to go to Pakistan u've limited options. due to terrorism threats, no western airlines fly to Pak.

the other option for u wud be to fly to say Karachi via Delhi coz all western airlines go to Delhi. itys cheaper as well.**

Re: etihad or PIA - current status?

I dont know about PIA's current service, but Etihad is a very decent airline. The entertainment system is one of the best in the world. Food is good and service is excellent as well.. I have travellend New York-Auh many a times to say that :)

But yeah PIA should be good at long haul, and you shoudl get the feel of Pakistan before reaching it :).

Re: etihad or PIA - current status?

@hashmat: im not too keen on flying any of those western airlines, cuz even though i know service wise they r much better, its a diff. and pleasant feeling while travelling on an Islamic airline... my options are emirates etihad and PIA..amongst these three i know emirates wud win hands down, but it only travels dduring weekdays and i gotta go on weekend..so etihad and PIA are my choices... so far it seems etihad seems to be a good airlines, and i'm thinking i might give it a shot.. thansk for the advice btw:)

@cooolbreeze: yeah thats why i'm even considering PIA - cuz ppl say that over the longer route PIA's service has improved a lot..plus its the "feel of pakistan" that has always made me want to ride it - even though i have heard mostly not so good reviews abt it...and plus i hardly travel - this time i'm going to Pak after like 5 years...and dunno when i wud head next..which is why i wanted to try PIA..but so far it seems i shud just stick with etihad rather than doing any experiment that wud last 14 years nonstop:p lol.... i am going to travel in PIA in pak though - but that wud only be domestic...it wud be a totally diff. feeling to step right into a pakistani atmosphere at the pearson airport itself.. :D so i'm still confused..and m just gonna book whtever is available now:)

Re: etihad or PIA - current status?

i liked etihad

**twinklystar_hp **I would recommend PIA. I have quite a lot of experience travelling and I make this recommendation wisely.

Firstly, it's admirable you want to travel on an Islamic airline, but apart from the fact that the names of Emirates/Etihaad are Arabic, there is actually very little 'Islamic' about them - they serve alcohol as well as non-halal meals. Secondly, the major point against these two airlines is they generally make a stop-over either in Dubai or Abu Dabhi. That can mean a wait of 4-5 hours or sometimes an over-night stay. Generally, I like to avoid this, because South Asians (with or without the Canadian passport) are considered inferior by the Arabs.

Thirdly, PIA uses its new 777 on long-haul flights, which not only means you get generally new planes, but also these aircraft can travel longer distances (not directly relevant to you, but fuel efficient and hence, help the economy!).

Look, there was a time where PIA was notorious for being 5 hours late with astounding delays. However, that's changed. Today's world is hugely competitive - even 10 minutes over the alloted time incurs heavy fines for the airline. In terms of punctuality, I have seen significant improvement in PIA. Since the last 8-9 years, they have never been late, or even if they are are 10-20 minutes late, they somehow manage to make it to Pakistan before ETA ;)

With regards the atmosphere, yes it's Pakistan. There may be crying children, but which airline doesn't have that? If you want to avoid that, get an Economy Plus or Business ticket, because Economy on any airline isn't going to be perfect. The cabin crew are as cabin crews should be - to be honest, I feel vastly more comfortable with PIA cabin crew than with Etihaad's or Emirates, because at least they're Pakistani, they're your people. The other two airlines employ staff from all nationalities, which is perfectly fine but they're not on your plane (no pun intended!).

The food is great, both in terms of quality and portion size. It's obviously geared towards the Pakistani palette so none of the stuff you'll get on Etihaad/Emirates. Of course, you can request a diet/diabetic/vegetarian/fish meal also.

As for those people complaining about entertainment... PIA was actually the first airline in the world to introduce in-flight movies on international routes. With regards to the present, they have significantly upgraded their inflight systems, meaning you get a large variety of Pakistani dramas, movies, English movies, sports, religious events, songs, Quran recitation etc. Yes, Emirates/Etihaad probably have more, but PIA's is sufficient.

One thing: I don't think PIA broadcasts any Indians movies (something I agree with) so if that's one of your criteria, just be warned...

thanks for the reply.... ur comment has made me lot more inclined towards travelling in PIA now:p

i completely agree with the bolded statement:) yes it is true, even though naam se toh they r islamic, but there really is nothing islamic about them other than halal food...but still compared to other to other western one, i still do feel a bit at peace when they recite travel dua in the beginning..... abt the stops, etihad makes 3 hours stop on abu dhabi which in my opinion is the MOST BORING airport in the world..so yeah not too keen abt that..:D

@bold: one of the main reasons i really wanna give PIA a shot:) as for kids, im all cool with kids as long as they don't come and disturb me:P:P LOL! and yeah i agree every airline has kids...so wtever... its just when ppl mention kids on PIA they make it sound as if there is a ZOO of crying kids on the plane:P but that i think is a bit too much of exaggeration..

@bold: im PURE non-veg:P:P LOL!

as for entertainment..my friend mentioned how they show pakistani dramas..and i love pakistani dramas..so that was one thing that made me reconsider my decision of flying etihad... as for indian movies - had u mentioned this fact a few months ago, i might have ended up sticking with etihad..but now i don't find the movies even a tiny bit interestign (unless its a shahid movie:P ) ...and other than this, the fact that im thousands of feet above the land is a thought that is scaring me quite a bit nowadays after hearing abt some crashes...so i wud rather be listening to Quran recitation to calm my heart :)

all in all, even though i know etihad is a great airline, i do think i might give PIA a shot since the truth is that i have ALWAYS wanted to travel to pak in it...

thanks for the awesome reply:)

seedhy rasthy jao beshak howay door ,

pakistan ko support karo india ko nahin

Re: etihad or PIA - current status?

another question, just out fo curiosity - etihad or emirates?? which ones better between thsoe two?? :D

Re: etihad or PIA - current status?

When r u planning to travel? Me and my family are going to Karachi via Eitihad cuz the ticket is more cheaper than PIA and the last time I traveled with PIA which was 2 yrs back it was 5 hours delayed. I don't like their service either. But if you don't intend to stay in Abu dhabi airport then travel with PIA. Emirites is good too but again I would go with a cheaper ticket because even 100-300 $ can make a difference!

thats a difficult one.. Emirates is always expensive than Etihad ( at least 10-25%) in my observation. There service is obviously higher than Etihad as well... but both are pretty good airlines...

Re: etihad or PIA - current status?

I flew with Etihad from NYC on Oct 5th......I had a wonderful experience... Most of the plane was empty and many people slept on the center 4 seats all along. Food is good, halal and plenty and their E-Box(etihad entertainment is pretty decent too). One of my friends travelled with PIA on the 3rd and it was 4-5 hours late.

Re: etihad or PIA - current status?

i flew with PIA last year, lahore to amsterdam … it was a pretty decent flight … lack of entertainment indeed … but becuz the number of people of SOOOOO less, then man sitting next to me left to sit elsewhere, and then i had the whole 2 seats to myself … although i could’ve moved to the middle as well and have 4 seats all to myself :meeno:
But the airhostess/stewards were nice … one or two stewards were hot too :expressionless: … not that that is your concern :meeno:
now i have to fly again, i asked PIA .. but they gave me a ridiculous figure AFTER my student discount … so i have to see …
Do other flights also give a student discount?
