never realized there was such a vast difference in ethnic groups and languages between india and pakistan. i don’t know why i figured both had basically the same amount of diversity…obviously not the case at all whatsoever.

Re: Ethnic groups and languages of Pakistan and

it is like france and australia, what a difference

which ethnic groups do people on GS belong to?

probably most are punjabi? :hmmm:

Re: Ethnic groups and languages of Pakistan and

jeez why so obsession with ethnicity? The CIA Factbook reports that the ethnic groups of India are: Aryan 72%, Dravidian 25%, Mongoloid and other 3% (2000). not very diverse, eh? clearly Indian government is not comfortable probing its OWN citizens about their “ethnic groups” yet indians seem strangely so interested in the “ethnic groups” of Pakistan.

Re: Ethnic groups and languages of Pakistan and

^^^well ok then, not just pakistan, bangladesh, nepal too. all of south asia.
is it wrong to be interested in pakistan, pakistani subcultures. most pakistanis seem to be punjabi right? I figured since GS was for pakistanis that it was the perfect place learn about all the different subcultures. …abcd here so be gentle :phati:

i’m including languages too here along with subcultures. with india going from east to west and north to south, the image of what an indian looks like and talks like totally changes.

Re: Ethnic groups and languages of Pakistan and

There are around 40 'official' languages in India. The country is massively diverse!

Re: Ethnic groups and languages of Pakistan and

Sadly, most Indians wouldn't even have heard the names of most of them.

Re: Ethnic groups and languages of Pakistan and

ok, and...?

Just a little FYI, event the major languages have their own dialects even though they are classified as one ethnic language. For example, moving across Punjab, you will hear different dialects of Punjabi itself. Similarly, just go north and south of Punjab and you'll come across the so called "Other" languages. Only difference is that even if the language in India is spoken by a 100 people, it's documented and maybe it's not so in Pakistan. This is because the people documenting these are not interested in what happens in Pakistan, they want to know what's going on in India as to them, it's the only country with brown people.

Re: Ethnic groups and languages of Pakistan and

  1. I never knew that CIA is an organization under Indian control
  2. India and Indians are proud of the immense diversity of our country. Unlike some, we do not suffer from insecurity. Special efforts are made by the Indian goverment to preserve various languages.

Following are the maps published by Central Institute of Indian Languages, a government funded institution.

Re: Ethnic groups and languages of Pakistan and

my point wasn't to show this country is more diverse than that country or anything childish like that.

but i used to think that most all subcultures/languages india had were present in pakistan too in almost equal amounts which is not the case.

Re: Ethnic groups and languages of Pakistan and

Nisha,
I don't know from where you got this idea, but aside from some superficial similarities, India and Pakistan are two completely different nations . We have different conceptions of past, contrasting present priorities and completely divergent future prospects.

We look, eat, speak, think and dress differently.
