Woke up this morning to see that there was no Internet connection. Checked the Device Manager and there is a big, yellow, exclamation mark next to the Ethernet, under the Network section. Hmmm …

PC - Windows XP
Ethernet: 3com 3c920b-emb-wnm
The internet on my laptop is working fine, so it isn’t a problem with the modem. I do believe it is the Ethernet on the PC. I ran a virus check via Malware Bytes, Microsoft Malicious Malware remover, HijackThis, etc. No virus.
I have the original CDs that came with the computer. The motherboard is an ASUS-P4R800-VM. I tried deleting the Ethernet and reinstalling it directly from the CD. Didn’t work. Exclamation mark is still there. I keep getting the “Code 10” error stating that the Ethernet simply is not working.
Sooo, I googled on my laptop. Went directly to the 3Com website to download the Driver Installer as I figured reloading the driver would make it work properly. I had to put the “.exe” onto my flashdisk and transfer it onto the PC. The program won’t even open this way. I tried downloading the Driver only, still won’t work.
I even went into the BIOS configurations to see if anything had gone wonky, but it was all fine.
I decided to unplug the computer, unscrew it and take it apart to see if anything was loose. I ended up gently vacuuming the inside of the computer … … but the problem remains the same. The Ethernet is not being recognized and I cannot get onto the internet.
From what I have read online, even if I format the computer and totally wipe it clean, the problem is still going to be there.
Jst request the service provider to restart/reset ur IP they do somthg , somthg ths kinda thing happen so jst request them nothing to worry keepin in mind if ur destop system hardware is perfectly alrgiht thn only else chk ur hardware first .
so it won’t even let you upgrade the device drivers for this device?
i guess you made sure the device is connected correctly. For example, makin sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated. nothing changes when you remove the ethernet card and replace it back in the slot or put it in a different slot? i was hoping it would redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard.
I don’t know what i did, but it is working fine now. I checked the Device Manager and there is no longer any exclamation mark beside the Ethernet. I figure I uninstalled and reinstalled the Ethernet several times yesterday, it must have worked one of those times.
I do need to update all the drivers though. Is there any software that will allow me to do this without having to purchase it? I checked on the official websites for ASUS and 3Com and they are charging quite a bit. Plenty of softwares are free to download, but to actually update the drivers, they want an arm and a leg. Any other alternatives???
You people should first read it completely and then it would have been easy to trace down to fault. She said..
It means the hardware or the hardware drivers had problems and not the allocation of IP by the modem or router.
Well its nice to hear that “somehow” it worked. Further more there isnt any good driver update software for free but there are some paid ones. Eg: Driver Genius Professional.
arrey i would think that’s part of the physically layer almost 90% of the time it’s this physical layer that has problems. cables should always be checked,hardware including the NIC and whether the port is functioning or not. hardware and the drivers!
if something like this happens again i.e your ethernet/internet/interweb/intranet stops working, unplug the cables going to the modem, wrap a duct tape around the cable, power down ur modem and your PC, plug the ethernet cable back into PC and start modem and then PC. That should do it.
