Do you think it is rude to point out someone’s error in speech? If they mispronounced something, for example? Does it depend on how well you know them?
I won’t go around correcting strangers but I have this urge to tell an aunty we frequently visit that it’s bouquet, not “boofay” … stubble, not stipple… Parvez Musharraf, not Mubashar and I could go on. Why won’t anyone in her family correct her, I wonder!
i hate it, when people interrupt me .. oh.. its this and thats how it pronounce .. .wth ..
oki granted i didn't went to oxford but hey.. i don't give a shyt if you have better accent, because in real life it doesn't matter.
Next time you are around her talk about Parvez Musharraf, and every time you mention his name, you should prunounce Musharraf really slowly and loud.
Hopefully she will get the hint.
Lol u don’t need to go to Oxford to have the correct names?
One time, this lady came to my office, and she was really rude to my receptionist…she kept saying “pacific” in place of Specific, I felt like correcting her but didn’t…instead i just did what Le Pakistan said
sad thing is, I heard a few ppl say “pacific” instead of specific.
All my life I have heard Pakistani darzi and some older aunties use the word shaling instead of shrink. Now my MIL says that too but I know what she means and and things get done but yeah I don’t think its appropriate for me to say to her that its shrink and not shaling. If its my husband or siblings then I do correct their mispronunciation and they do mine.
Oh and many girls say dubatta instead of dupatta and they don’t get the pronunciation no matter how many times they hear it.
I have been quite rudely corrected at 2 incidents when I pronounced Can (soda can) as cane and vending machine as wending machine ..and btw, these are some of the most common mispronunciations by desis
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH…I hate that so so so so so so so much! Pacific…Libary…Aks…FASFA instead of FAFSA. I used to work for several uni’s and every time someone said these words I felt like snapping.
But I didn’t. I said “you mean you need to fill out a FAFSA?”
That’s funny…lol
I think its rude to correct people in a way where you’re embarrassing them. Sometimes they don’t know and sometimes they don’t care. Either way, you pronounce words right and hopefully it will rub off.
I never mind errors in speech because I am culprit myself, I deliberately speak in punjabi accented hindi:D, it brings right attitude in me, I suppose. Similarly I speak in thick malwi accent of punjabi to anyone who seems to know punjabi. once while talking to my mom I said " waradrobe da mela lagaya ae pargati maidan ton:D", my hubby said " its not pargati but pragati:bummer:" my answer was “Chal oye! punjabi mein pragati ko pargati hi kehtein hain:D”
I am always sorry for my mispronunciation but one should appreciate that I am being original:), yeah it is irritating and may piss others off but neither I can stop pissing you off nor does you can stop from getting pissed. See, we both are helpless:)
It doesnt bother me, i find that its my job to try and understand the person who is talking to me regardless of their pronunciation.
I think its different when I come across someone with an accent. Accents cannot really be helped...maybe with some work over and time but not immediately at least. So in those cases, I do my very best to understand and never make someone feel like they're not communicating properly.
But when I see someone who CAN pronounce and they STILL call me Rena instead of Reha...:ASA:
OMG!!! I just came in to admit how I always correct everything that is wrong in speech/grammar. :hinna:
I do it alot. I mean not really alot but…yeah okay alot.
It is mostly Urdu that I like to correct. It’s very much a reflex action for me. Although it does depend on who I’m with. I don’t go about correcting random people on the street.
