Ergonomic Mouse

I have purchased about 4 different mouse/keyboard sets over the last one year without any success.

I have RSI with symptoms of CTS… and over the last one month, I’ve had to use an immobilizing brace for extremely long periods.

I’m hearing some good things about the vertical mouse by Evoluent:

I’m just wondering if anyone has used the vertical mouse or another brand/type that has worked for them.

I know that ergonomic is primarily a personally specific issue and I wouldn’t know until I try something myself… but any suggestions ??

Re: Ergonomic Mouse

Have you tried a trackball mouse?

For some people that works out when nothing else does.

Re: Ergonomic Mouse

I know this will be a bit expensive, but have you considered getting rid of the mouse completely. Maybe look into a touch-screen based solution.

Re: Ergonomic Mouse

Here’s another idea: Finger Mouse

I bought something like back in the 90’s. With mine there was a frame that went on the right and top of the monitor (X, Y axis).

Or the finger trackball mouse:

Re: Ergonomic Mouse

Ahh i can feel the stretching done to reach that scroll wheel. Looks like a pain to type with too.

Re: Ergonomic Mouse

yeah… I’ve tried trackballs - but there’s not much of a difference. My chiro says I need something even more ergonomic.

I don’t think the price is all that much of an inhibitor but I’m not sure if my productivity will be negatively affected.

After some research, I’m thinking about this one here:

will update this thread with my lowdown once I use it.

Re: Ergonomic Mouse

risc / cheegs... I actually got to try the joystick mouse by 3M at Office Place. It seems to be better than the traditional choice but I expect the vertical mouse to be even better since its builds upon the 3M design and enhances it through other useful ergonomic features. Additionally from whatever I've read online the Evoluent vertical mouse has an easier learning curve - will tell you how true that is in a few days.

Just an update, i’m still using this vertical mouse at my workplace. People look at it and ask me why i have a joystick on my desk and i have to explain to them its for cripples like me

It was a bit tough to get used to in the beginning, but after a couple months of fiddling i have become very comfortable with it and its been over a year using it. The idea is that you use your whole arm to move the mouse around and bring your wrist movement down to zero, which is the most likely place you will experience pain due to repetitive stress. Moving your whole arm around means you need more room on your desk to move around. Seems very alien in the beginning but you get used to it.

The left mouse button is controlled by the thumb and double-clicking with your thumb is not fun. To counter that i have sortve adjusted my habits to reduce double clicking unless absolutely necessary. Or sometimes i just cheat and bring my index finger up to double-click.

I have a regular mouse plugged in too and placed far away so anytime my colleagues need to use my computer they just grab it and start using it.

I must say my wrist has received a much deserved break courtesy of this mouse and i would recommend it to anyone looking into a proper ergonomic solution that not only looks weird but also does what its supposed to do.

I have seen someone use this pen device. Amazon.com: Bamboo Fun (Small) Silver Tablet with Pen, Mouse & Graphics Software: Electronics

Re: Ergonomic Mouse

Become a lefthander  and forget all those funny looking mouses. Any standard mouse works great. And no problem with RSI issue’s or a mouse arm  etc

but I prefer any wireless mouse by Logitech. Though since most mouse are made for right-handers, so currently I love and own the one which comes with the Logitech Cordless Desktop S510 or S520.
