There was this time at work in a meeting … Being the quality person I measure root causes of issues that develop in the business and engineering activities at work so … I had inherited this format for a spreadsheet tool that was being used by some others and I started to use it under instruction and one of the listed root causes stated is:
“horseplay” - now this is a term not commonly used today - but I was okay with it because I understood it i.e. that as a result of horseplay certain things could have gone wrong. basically horseplay means mucking around … It wasn’t until the managers asked about did it actually come in to discussion …
So eventually one of that managers eventually asked me why does it say horseplay there - I explained that I inherited the format and didn’t put it in … The others looked perplexed as well and then found it funny … but then I decided to say something and meant something else but they took it wrongly and that was a weird moment for me …
I said, “yeah, it sounds like … you know?” and at this point I wanted to say something like “as if two people are up to some naughty behaviour” but instead I said … “a bit kinky” …
And for some reason they looked at each other and burst out laughing … and my manager said … “moving on quickly” …
So you need to understand that I’m obviously Muslim and they consider me reserved and serious and I never swear … if they do in my company they apologise … For them they heard something else - something distinctly different to what I was saying …
Later I realised after thinking about it … that they thought I thought “horseplay … sounds kinky” in that “playing with horses is like a fetish” and I was totally weird’ed out … I couldn’t even explain what I meant … they took it wrongly …

^Psyah Bhai, your story reminded me of the time when I was in the 3rd grade. We were working on a play rehearsal, I think. A classmate and I were off track, giggling and just being silly. The teacher, Mr. Godwin, approached us and sternly asked us if we wanted to wanted to settle down or horseplay…obviously expecting us both to answer with the former. It was the first time I had ever heard the word horseplay and it just sounded so cool and interesting which naturally made it the wrong answer by default. And maybe it was a brain-fart moment or perhaps I was just so intrigued with the word that I confidently picked the latter option. And he glared back at me saying, “You want to horseplay?” I dunno what I was thinking? I was a good kid and I usually stayed out of trouble, but I was also a quiet kid and my quietness perturbed a few of my teachers. And I bet such a response would seem more impertinent and smart-alecky coming from the quiet ones than the habitual troublemakers.

RV , really enjoyed reading your weird moment. I once had a total loss of voice but an extremely urgent meeting was heading in two days and I decided to go to it with the little voice I had. We got the deal but the client was laughing afterwards and said she worked freaking hard to get that voice out , I couldnt have said no to all that hard work .. I think i felt embarrassed to the core !! and back at work one of my managers kept waving his hand in the air and saying !germs , germs everywhere ! I took the hint and realized they were mucking me off out of the office!

I don’t think I felt any symptoms (sore throat, cough, etc etc) that I was without a voice until I opened my mouth, lol. The people at work prolly thought, “Duh, why come to work if you know you have no voice.” Only I didn’t know.

When I don’t understand what someone is saying after asking them to repeat themselves three times, I just giggle nervously and nod in approval (or something to that effect). So this one time apparently I agreed to having had alcohol at some point in my life when I hadn’t.
