The first is laser and the second is electrolysis. They are completely different methods of hair removal.
Laser is classified by the FDA as permanent hair reduction as it cannot eliminate all types of hair - only hair which is thick and dark (has a lot of pigment in it). So even if you do it on the arms or legs, you cannot get rid of 100% of the hair, but a decent enough reduction depending on the hairs. So in hair removal, a handpiece is used that directs the Laser spot on to the skin. The light energy is absorbed by the hair, which generates heat and damages the follicle, hopefully enough to destroy it’s hair producing capability. Usually on the newer/better machines, it has a spot size of minimum 12mm. There are two main types of Laser that emit light at different wavelengths - one that is suitable for white skin and the other that is suitable for tan and darker skin. Laser type and machine brand are really important in Laser treatments.
Electrolysis is a completely different form of hair removal. It can be completely permanent as it can eliminate any kind and colour of hair and will work on any skin type. In electrolysis, a needle in inserted in the follicle. A current passes through the needle to damage follicle. There are 3 types of electrolysis, but only two are now widely used. One is called thermolysis and uses an AC current to produce heat which damages the follicle. The other is called Blend and uses both an AC current (the thermolysis current) and a DC current competent that produces lye in the follicle that aids in damage. Blend is slower but a lot of electrologists prefer it because it is kinder to the skin (if used properly) and easier to perform. Thermolysis can work very well/just as well too, but it’s harder to get the results (i.e. minimal reaction on client skin, sufficient damage of the follicle) so less electrologists are as skilled in it.
With electrolysis, it’s very important to understand the process and find a good electrologist. Otherwise it can be ages before you realise you are wasting money on treatments that aren’t working. Or the electrologist is leaving your skin looking like hell and tells you it’s normal.
For example, my aunt was sucked in by her waxing lady who said ‘oh yea I do electrolysis too’. This woman had no clue what she was doing, could not insert the needle properly (was just stabbing her skin) and didn’t even know to tell my aunt that for electrolysis to be effective, she has to stop waxing/plucking. God knows whether she was even using a real electrolysis machine. My aunt had no clue about the process either and thought the pain was normal. Only when I found all this out and found her a REAL electrologist and she had a consultation, did she realise how much of a sham the other lady was. You’re not supposed to feel the needle go in the follicle! Although, you will feel pain/discomfort when the current is passed; experienced electrologists generally perform this which the shortest possible gap though.
I have blend performed on my face and thermolysis on the body areas where the hair is too fine for laser. For example, I got about 80% reduction on the underarms with laser, then switched to electrolysis to remove the rest of the hairs.
In my opinion, doesn’t matter if the hairs are thick or thin, if you want to treat the face, electrolysis is a much better option.
Thanks for the Information, Do you know how I can find out whose good at doinf electrolysis and whose just ripping me off…though you mentioned a very good point that I will keep in mind that the needle shouldn’t hurt the current should…
