Re: epidural?

random fact: if you have a lower back tattoo, they won't give you the epidural because they're afraid the ink might make its way to your blood stream if they inject over it. d'oh.
so no lower back tattoos, ladies! :P

i've heard there are two types of epidural- one where you have the anesthesiologist and he regulates it, letting it lapse when you have to push and increase when you're in pain. and the kind where they inject you and then pull the tube out so its just the one dose. im thinking a good anesthesiologist could be your best friend there. from my preggo friends, i hear contractions and labour pain are not necessarily pain, they're more like pressure. is this true? of course, these are also women who had their kids in under 30 minutes... could that be a part of it?

Re: epidural?

You should have epidural. I think they are blessings you can deliver baby easily.

Re: epidural?

i am anaesthesiologist myself..i got it for my baby and it worked !! an epidyral is supposed to be given before the actual pain begins,so that the drug injected can block the pain receptors before they are activated..in patients with labour,it is injected at about 5-6 cms dilatation..

having an epidural depends on your pain threshold..mine was bad, i needed it.. my labour was 12 hours long..my cousin had her first baby last week and the total labour was for 1.5 hours amazingly !! she was already 7 cms when she reached the hospital and it was all painless till then !! there was no time for the epidural and she delivered v. fast.. so it varies from person to person and on luck too!! my cousin always wanted to have one but she didnt get a chance for it !!

i would recommend it but would strongly suggest to read lot of Quran during pregnancy and pray for the ease of labour ! it works..believe me !

Re: epidural?

Nowadays they inject it earlier too at 2 cm or so, previously it was 6 cm or so. But not too late in delivery.

Re: epidural?

yeah cos a friend got it when she was 1cm... very low pain threshold.
she suffered later though cos they wouldnt give it to her again and her labour was loooooong.

Re: epidural?

They do increase the dose off and on like they did for me. I was crying through the epidural and the nurse said that shouldn't happen and she called the ansthesialogist and he adjusted the dose. I don't know about the low pain threshold, I was in labor for 24 hours at home and so when I got to the hospital, I was in bad pain but I was only 2 cm dialted despite that. They gave me pitocin later to speed things up but before that I did get some pain medication and then later an epidural. The long labor thing was true for me and I guess the same for your friend.
