epidural and lower back pain?

I have had back pain during my pregnancy but its worse now after delivering my baby.. I had a back labor of36 hours, took epidural at 8 cm, ended with emergency csection, its been 4 months now and my lower back is constantly aching.. at times I cant even sit in the chair or on bed to feed my child. I just keep writhing in pain hoping it will get better some day.

I have been diagnosed with disk-herniation in L5, retroflex uterus, but neither the spine specialist nor the obgyn can figure out whats causing this pain!!Now, I am thinking it may be due to epidural.. did anyone experience this? or something similar?

Any thoughts?

Re: epidural and lower back pain?

Gia, you know my story … I have two slipped discs in L4 and L5. If you have L5 herniation, it is probably also pinching the nerves into your legs.

You need to just let it heal. Go on disability leave if you can cause this is a serious injury.

Your pain will get better. Remember, it took me roughly 8 months in total but I need to be careful for life as it can pop out again at any time. Go to the chiropractor, go for physio and start yoga. Put ice on the pain … 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off …

I don’t think epidural alone is the culprit, although it could be connected. I really do not know. They injected me twice with epidural and it didn’t even work.

We put on a lot of weight during the pregnancy which affects the lower spine and nerves.

Once you are ready, you need to strengthen your body and your core. I didn’t realize that the stomach region actually supports the lower back. We need to do core exercises and just strengthen our muscles and bodies, which takes time but it is good for the back.

Also, how are you sleeping? What position? Do you put a pillow between your knees (sleeping on your side) when you sleep to alleviate the pain?

Re: epidural and lower back pain?

Mehnaz.. I cant afford to go on disability so I have to make itwork.. I am planning to go for physical therapy as recommended by my primary but also need to figure out the exact reason since I had nerve testing as well as some MRI's done.. the spine specialist didnt think that I have apinched nerve or something similar since my pain used to be positional.. I had pins n needles sensation in my calves starting 20 weeks of pregnancy only when I lied down.. I hardly ever slept during my pregnancy! but now its my lower back! I sometimes find a relief if I sleep on my stomach.. which makes me think that something is pushing the nerves when I lie on my back!!! arghhh I wish I could just figure out whats causing it to get it treated. :(

I believe I need to start exercising now!! will check out the link you posted.

the one n only me.. I hope the pain goes away.. it's killing me!!!

Re: epidural and lower back pain?

Just remember, driving can make it worse. Just being in that sitting position (in the car or at work) puts a lot of pressure on the lower back nerves and discs. If you can, ice your back as soon as you are done driving, even if it is at work.

If your back feels ok when you sleep on your tummy, try and do the cobra pose. Actually, please ask your physiotherapist first, but I am sure they will eventually suggest this.

Re: epidural and lower back pain?

oh didnt know about the driving bit.. thanks for sharing!!

I will definitely check with the physiotherapist regarding the exercises.. I had heard about pelvic tilt and saw it in the exercises you shared.. I shall try!!!

Thanks so much...I just want to recover from this pain!!!
