Re: Enough is enough; Will the Commando surface please?!!
so what you are saying is that prior to ayub all was well with our political parties? :)
No. I am saying that had Ayub not intervened, we might have been able to steady the ship. Don't forget, we had finally managed to come up with a constitution in 56. Good or bad, it could have been amended. It was a secular constitution to boot. Through political process, I dont see why we could not have over come our differences. All democracies, except perhaps Amreeka, face teething problems. No? Even India had it's mid life crisis in the 70's. England..France? All of them
On the other hand, even if I do accept ur argument for a while that political parties were a bunch of jack asses, what exactly did Ayub do to improve the lot of people or the parties? Basic democracy? One-man constitution? Ridiculing Jinnah's sister with rigged elections? What exactly is his contribution to the political process in Pakistan?
and so what if ZAB got nurtured, he is gone, do we have to now deal with his kids to run the country?
Yes. Thanks in big part to Zia.
so yeah these ppl got in power in their parties somehow, some got propped, others got charity votes, etc etc, but then what happened then nothing changes? are people in these parties blind or lack the capacity to think, or are voters in pakistan a bunch of idiots who can not show their displeasure with parties? for all the political bakbak that desis do, I have yet to see some real concreet movement from citizens asking for political parties transparency and change.
Easy to blame the people but let's take a look at the statistics. Poverty? Education? Health? The state, majority of the time under military control, has failed on all these issues. When I don't have food on my table, hell with democracy? When I can't sum up 2+2, how do I distinguish between BB and NS and the third option..whoever and whenever? When my vadera asks me for a vote..who tells me of my rights? Enter the judiciary. The Judiciary was subdued very early on by the military in the shape of doctrine of necessity. It's taken it 60 years to grow some manly organs. U can already see it's impact on jirga system , otherwise called the National Assembly/Executive. Imagine if judiciary had been independent full 60 years. There is an obvious desire for constitutionalism than ever in our history.
Pakistani awaam has been oppressed for 60 years by both military and political governments. I think it's unfair to first deny them their basic right, push them in poverty, develop elitist economies (just last night Ishrat Hussain admitted elitist economy is still the main problem in Pak. And he's the architect of current economic policies. what does that tell u?) , accumulate assets in few hands, and then blame the public at large for all the wrongs. Whatever democracy we had was skewed because of lack of independent media and judiciary and behind the scenes role of the Army. Only now will the political parties be really tested when we have both an independent media and judiciary to keep a check on them. I am very optimistic we'll get it right this time.
