I give my 10 months old daughter (before bedtime) about a cup (almost 7oz) of thick cereal (usually mix) with fruit. But still she gets up for milk at night 1-2 times. For me its fine but people around me say she shouldn’t be getting up at nights for milk.
whats your opinion? what can i give to her to make her full for whole night?
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
How do you know she's getting up for milk?
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
mano - I think all babies wake up during night once or twice for milk. With my daughter no matter how much she eats she needs milk to go to sleep and food does not replace the need of her milk intake. It's habitual too I guess because babies get used to having milk during the night.
I usually do not give her anything heavy to eat before bed time I mostly give her milk so that she digest it well and can sleep peacefully.
I don't think you can do anything to make her sleep continuously whole night.
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
cereal doesnt cut it for some 10 month olds..you may have to replace it with something a bit ore filling like maybe porridge. most 10 month olds can sleep atleast 8 to 10 hours straight, get up for a milk feed and go right back to sleep.
a way of knowing if she is hungry is if she will take a whole feed when she wakes up in the middle of the night, that means she is not getting enough at dinner time to keep her going for the night
.. if she is waking up and drinks just 2 or 3 oz.. then she wasnt hungry and the problem lies elsewhere.
my son would sleep 12 hours straight after being fed cereal with fruit at 8 months... but he started to wake up 2ice in teh night when he was 10 months and i was confused... my nurse said i have to switch from cereal to porridge of any kind as they are thicker, and to prepare them in milk.. it keeps the baby full for the night.... and still offer a milk feed at bed time and let them drink however much they want. been doing that ever since and now my son is mashallah 17 months. sleeps through the night. sure there is a night or 2 where he does get up and i start to think no way is he hungry... and he isnt... just wants some cuddling.
try it. :)
if this doesnt work, it must be something else thats bothering her.. maybe its too hot in the room or too cold or she needs a comfort toy? rule out one thing at a time.
also.. dont rush in the minute you hear her crying.... wait it out for 5 mins.. sometimes they are crying in their sleep and its the grown up that actually WAKES them by going in... ive done this with my son a few times... he lets out a cry.... whines for a bit and then goes back to sleep :D
if she stays crying, then go in.
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
I think it is very possibly separation anxiety and not hunger.
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
ya thats why i said she has to rule it out... if the baby only sucks for a bit and doesnt take a full feed, then its not hungry.. and its probably something else...i only brought up the hunger cuz thats what my exp was.
mine was hunger AND thirst.. cuz where we live its ultra dry and since its winter for 10 months, the heating doesnt help... had to feed AND put in a humidifier to keep him good and comfy for the night.
man the trial and error that is parenting... hated it!
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
Khawa, what's the difference between porridge and cereal?
I do think you shouldn't assume she's hungry, tho that much cereal may make her thirsty. Do you give water? Try rocking her a bit in your arms and see if she seems to fall back to sleep. If she's twisting around and trying tomfeed, then I guess she's hungry. Also, could it be diaper issues?

Re: Enough food for 10 months old
ok i forgot that we have diff terms for the same product... but for me cereal is those store bought baby powder mixes... u just add water to it or milk.
and that is the issue... that powdered cereal works great for a baby that has just entered into the world of eating. for a 10 month old that is a seasoned eater (or nearly so), that powder liquid no matter how thick you make it just wont cut it anymore.. their tummies need something more to burn... chunks and solids
thats why porridge oatmeal etc etc .. anything of grain works out great for a growing baby... u start to give your baby more and more solids to keep their growing bodies full...they have to give their bodies something to slowly digest.. the more liquid and smooth something is, the faster its gonna digest... the faster your baby will get hungry...so a powdered cereal that ure 6 month old eats and stays full with, wont really keep a 10 month old full... thats why if you look at the ages, the max age a store bought cereal goes to is 8 months.... nothing after that. whilst a home ade porridge that is semi chunky or totally left as is after being cooked, feed that and your baby will stay full whilst its body digests the whole or split grains slowly.
not just with this... all other food that you give your baby... try to keep them as solid as you can ( or as much as your baby is able to eat safely)... good chewing excercise that also builds on oral skills, and hey your kid needs somethign to keep it full for longer.
my nurse suggested this to me at 8 months but my son was ok with the store bought cereals.. but not when he turned 10 months... started doing some serious home cooking for his bfast and it worked for me like magic!
hope i made sense. :s
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
Ah okay. I see.
Bunny (9.5 months) has such a small appetite, I never know when she's had enough or if she's full. Especially in the evenings! But still, she sleeps through the night, or if she wakes, she is fast asleep the minute we pick her up. She doesn't demand a feeding until around 6-7am.

Re: Enough food for 10 months old
if she stops eating that means she is done and full... and the fact that she is sleeping through the night is enough proof of that.. .congrats on the night winnings! its heaven isnt it :D
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
Lol yes, those sometimes I'm tempted to give her a bottle when she wakes up just to be held, just to get her to quiet down. :D
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
Thanks khawa and Sahar for your suggestions, I do give her water, but it might not be hunger or thirst because sometimes she only takes few oz of milk. I will try calming her in other ways to see whats the real problem.
Khawa what kind of milk you use for making the porridge? sometimes I do give her porridge but usually she doesn't take much of it to full her hunger. I will give it a try again.
The first feed that she demands or better said as, which I give her is after 6 hours of sleep.
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
Also I don't give her baby cereal alone, I mix porridge in it as she likes it this way more and with it, since few days she has started getting up mostly once, which is showing she used to be hungry.
And masha ALLAH she is excellent with solid foods, she loves them more than her baby food. But only problem is at night...
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
double post
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
ok thats good.. your making some imporovement....
if she likes solids better than anything, then just feed her that... the more solid her dinner will be, the longer it will digest.... but keep it on the lighter side of solids if you will be feeding her within an hour of sleeping... if its earlier, than it can be a hearty meal. at 10 months my son could not be bothered with solids in the evening so i only had the optoin of porridge... bit its great your daughter isnt a menace like that
but now that he is older....and taking an interest in solids, what i do sometimes is give my son 2 kebabs, 1 on bread and the other just like that... around 5 or 6 pm. tahn at 8.30 or 9 i give him as much porridge as he can eat.
adn then at bedtime which is 9.30, i give him however much milk he wants to drink.
so from 6 to 9.30 he is stuffed ... (he also wants to have what we are having at dinner so that is on top) :D mashallah.
just play around with it... ofcourse your girl's portions will be much small compared to my son's, but you get the jist of it
also... hunger may not be all of it... this would also be a good time to introduce a comfort toy in the form of a dupatta that smells liek you (though i was scared my son would strangle himself with it so never did this-though my friends do and their kids are very much alive :D ).... try a soft toy she can cuddle... something she can handle herself... mine is a long dog (like a hot dog) with flappy ears.... he likes to put the lower body under his legs and the neck around his head :D but ya.. just something kid has to hold on to at night.
like i said..alll trial and error.
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
we start cows milk full fat at 8 months .. like 1.4 cup... and then by 10 months they can take a cup in 24 hours... so i used to make his porridge in that .... and keep formula milk for his bottle.
but i dont know where u live and waht the ruling is for kids drinking cows milk at all under the age of 1... here its ok before 1 .. just in little portions. to get their tummies ready for the next phase in life once they do turn 1.
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
we have the same problem, the little one doesnt sleep during night and gets up 3-4 times for a feed, she is still breastfed (13 months old)
Now I tried filling her up, with food and cereal, but she will not eat enough before bedtime, so thats why she is hungry and I dont think I am producing enough also. I am trying to wean her but thats a difficult process, she hangs too much on it.
So khawteen, whats your recipe of porridge, do you cook it in milk ?
is it the same as the pic, because we have a different name for it in german its haferbrei ??
Re: Enough food for 10 months old
yup.. thats it.. we call it havregrød.
saadia.. if her bedtime is at say… 9, then feed her around 7… and then give her a milk feed at bedtime. my son refused to eat anything close to bedtime cuz he was tired. so i would feed him at 8 and his bedtime was 10 with a bottle feed.
i posted porridge recipes here
