English; the global language?

I stumbled across something interesting. It was a graphic with the main objective of reminding, the person looking at it, how lucky they are for what they have. Below is the link if you are interested.

The last point caught my eye; “If you can read this message you are more fortunate than 3 billion people in the world who cannot read it all”.

I thought that wasn’t too bad; just because you can’t read or write english dosen’t mean you are disadvantaged in any way. But does it?

I’m almost certain most people will agree that if we had to pick a language to represent our planet or entire civilisation it would most likely be english. But then that poses the question, how disadvantaged is someone if they cannot communicate in english? Especially in a day and age where the internet has greatly reduced the distances between people across continents. Smart phones are so easily accesible, a simple farm boy can be sitting under a tree, looking after his cattle and be updating his status on facebook.

Also, when did english become the language of the planet? Did the fact that the sun once never set on the British Empire have anything to do with it? Or is it the fact that the english language has assimilated several other languages into its vocabulary?

Just some things I was thinking about while doing a number 2.

Re: English; the global language?

The British Empire had a lot to do with the spread of their schooling system, as well as the language. After that, it was the scientific community virtually adopting English that solidifies it's status.

It kind of pisses me off that our people wholly rejected modernization and industrialization, and were fighting over religious BS, while the West was actually making progress.
