English Teachers status in society!

Are English Language teachers at High School Level given recognition in Pakistan’s academia?

in other words is Teaching English a respectable profession?

Re: English Teachers status in society!

I teach English in the US...never taught it in Pakistan, so I don't know how it is viewed there. But teaching is an honorable/respectable though under-paid profession. There is a lot that teachers deal with besides teaching such as managing unreasonable attitudes from students and parents. And for most teachers, their job doesn't end at 4:00 in the evening. Many of them grade papers and do lesson planning at home as well. And for English teachers....it's more work in the sense that it takes longer to read and grade 100 some essays from students.

It should be a respected profession because English is the universal language. It allows for across-the-globe communication and is so essential in the work place. My professor once said that teaching proper English communication to students is like helping them to speak "green" in the future. "Green" is the language of money, in other words.

Thanks redvelvet............need to convince a wanabee English teacher that Pakistan has good prospects for language teachers!

English teachers in the US are different than say an English teacher in another country.. in another country they'd be teaching them the language, grammar etc. Here, as far as I know, teaching proper grammar ends in junior high, in the hgiher levels it's all about literature and reading comprehension skills etc.
