SHOAIB BALL INCIDENT

Shoaib Akhtar was the key figure in a controversial moment during the third match of the NatWest Series at the Rose Bowl on Tuesday.
Just a fortnight after the dramatic finish to the Oval Test, Sky Television pictures midway through the England innings appeared to show the Pakistan fast bowler flicking his thumb at the ball as he walked back to his mark.
It could have been that Shoaib was removing mud or dirt from the ball, which is perfectly legal. The incident occurred three balls after Ian Bell had fallen to Shoaib.
There was no suggestion Pakistan had tampered with the ball and they continued to play on with it even after umpires Billy Doctrove and Nigel Llong inspected it after the 40th over.
Former England captain Michael Atherton, who was commentating for Sky at the time, invited the viewers to: “make your own minds up” after watching the footage.
Should match referee Mike Proctor believe Shoaib was doing anything illegal with the ball from the footage, the protocol would be to hold a hearing immediately after the match.

Vehemently ignored…but I think the field umpire’s decision is the final

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd ODI (d/n), 5th September 2006,The Rose Bowl

Hopefully Mike Proctor will only give Shoaib a warning for walking a fine line but not bring any charges against him as the umpires didn’t find any effects on the ball, and that will be the end of this story. Hopefully :frowning: :jhanda:

Re: England vs Pakistan 3rd ODI (d/n), 5th September 2006,The Rose Bowl

Younis Khan has truely reinvented himself. We complained that he’s a 40-s player who didn’t convert his good starts into anything meaningful and he started scoring big. We complained that he was too slow for the ODIs and he has beeen visibily trying to improve his ODI strike rate over the past year. I like such players who work hard on their weaknesses. Shoaib Malik is another such player who while lacking batting prowess, grew in application and determination and became a reliable batsman and a very good finisher for us. Hopefully he’ll grow out of his bad patch.

And then we have players like Yasir Hameed and Salman Butt, who couldn’t improve their weakness (incidentally the same for both) that got them out repeatedly in the same way.

Good job Younis Khan. Good job Shoaib Malik (I know he got out today, but hopefully he’ll bounce back).
