Re: England v Bangladesh
Bangladesh beat England in shock victory
They defended a seemingly below par total of 236 to bowl England out for 231 with three balls to spare.
Bangladesh won for the first time in 25 matches and enjoyed their first victory over England in any format with a stunning five-run success in the second one-day international here on Saturday.
They defended a seemingly below par total of 236 to bowl England out for 231 with three balls to spare.
Bangladesh had lost 24 matches in all formats since beating Zimbabwe by one wicket in a one-day international in Chittagong in November and came into this match on the back of Thursday's six-wicket series-opening loss at Trent Bridge.
But now they can dream of winning the three-match campaign 2-1 in the concluding match at Edgbaston on Monday.
"After 24 matches losing in a row, this dressing room had not really been happy," said Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza, the man of the match after scoring 22 and taking two for 42. "The dressing room is happy now.
"We have been working hard in the nets and we hoped that it would come."
Jamie Siddons, Bangladesh's coach, said he was stunned by a win which came against an England side who'd recently beaten world champions Australia 3-2 in a one-day series.
"It's hard to keep getting beaten and keep getting them up.
"Now I think they (the Bangladesh players) realise they can beat anyone," he added after a win that gave them at least one victory against all of cricket's leading nations.
The Australian added: "It's unbelievable. I would have thought England were on top of the world and capable of beating everyone.
"So to beat them at home.. it's a brilliant win."
England nearly avoided an embarrassing defeat thanks to Jonathan Trott's career-best 94.
However, Trott, in his first ODI since playing against his native South Africa in Port Elizabeth in November, was last man out when caught behind off Shafiul Islam.
The paceman held his nerve to finish with two wickets for 38 runs.
Admittedly Ian Bell - who made 84 not out at Trent Bridge on Thursday - did not come out to bat until England were nine wickets down and needing 10 off the last over, after breaking his foot while diving to try to take a catch during Bangladesh's innings.
But the Tigers were without Raqibul Hasan, who top-scored for them with 76 at Trent Bridge but had his toe broken by a James Anderson yorker in the process and wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim, who was ruled out after being hit in the face during the same match.
"We've only got ourselves to blame," said England captain Andrew Strauss. "We were not at the races, added the opener, whose side collapsed to 115 for five.
"We can't expect to turn up and win but you musn't take anything away from Bangladesh who deserved the win."
England were 166 for seven in the 40th over when Stuart Broad joined Trott.
The duo got the target down to 36 off five overs.
But their stand of 43 was broken when Broad, on 21, was well caught by a leaping Shakib at backward point off a flashing square drive from Mortaza's first ball back.
England needed 23 off the last two overs and then Trott inside edged a four off Mortaza before, next ball, driving the seamerdown the ground for a boundary.
However, off the final ball of the penultimate over, Anderson was caught and bowled for two by Mortaza.
Bell, with Eoin Morgan as a runner, came out to bat but Trott was on strike.
Trott took twos off the first two balls but was caught behind off the next to end a 129-ball innings that featured just eight fours.
England saw Strauss (33) and Craig Kieswetter (20) make a rapid start.
But paceman Rubel Hossain, in for dropped spinner Faisal Hossain, struck twice as both openers, as happened on Thursday, fell in quick succession.
Strauss tried to uppercut Rubel but steered him to stand-in wicketkeeper Jahurul Islam.
And 49 for one became 58 for two when the same duo dismissed Kieswetter.
Next ball, England might have been 58 for three.
But Paul Collingwood, whom replays suggested should have been given out caught behind for a golden duck, had made just 10 when he was lbw to spiner Abdur Razzak.
Replays indicated he'd got an inside edge but Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf gave him out and England were 86 for three.
Morgan was then lbw, hitting across the line, for one to Razzaq before Michael Yardy (10) was bowled by Shakib.
Earlier Bangladesh had been restricted to a seemingly modest total of 236 for seven after Strauss won the toss.
But Bangladesh opener Imrul Kayes made a valuable 76 in an innings where the next best contribution was Mahmudullah's 24 not out.
Re: England v Bangladesh
Now we know how they were able to pull test matches into 5th day! They are improving fast now :k:
Re: England v Bangladesh
I know people love to make fun of BD cuz they suk.. but their rate of improvement is much better than India or Pakistan's when they started playing International cricket.
In another 5-10 years they should become very competitive. Asia Cups are going to get much funner. So will Asian Test Championships.
Re: England v Bangladesh
^ nah
Pakistan (test debut in 1952) won only their 2nd-ever test (against India), infact won tests against India, Australia England, NZ and WI in their first-ever bilateral series. No other test nation can boast of such a proud record
PAKISTAN - First-ever series
http://www.howstat.com.au/cricket/Statistics/Matches/MatchListCountry.asp?A=PAK
Pak v India (1952, in India) - Pak lost five-match series 1-2, won second test (Fazal Mahmood 12/94)
Pak v England (1954, in England) - drew four-match series 1-1, won 4th test at The Oval (Fazal Mahmood 12/99)
Pak v NZ (1956, home) - Pak won three-match series 2-0
Pak v Australia (1957, home) - Pak won only test (1-0), Fazal Mahmood 13/114 in Karachi
Pak v WI (1958, in West Indies) - Pak lost five-match series 1-3
Pak v WI (1959, home) - Pak won 2-1, Fazal Mahmood 12/100 in Karachi (2nd test)
Bangladesh (test debut 2000) won their 1st-ever test after 36 attempts and that too against lowly-rated Zimbabwe at home in 2005

Bangladesh’s test record over the past decade
just 3 wins and a whopping 59 losses in 68 tests - absolutely crap!!
Based on the above performance Bangladesh should not be playing test-cricket
Re: England v Bangladesh
Asif.. did these teams in the 1950s have a lot of left over british players? If not then thanks for correcting me. I take it back. It was just an impression I had that Ind and Pak had struggled a lot till the 1980s when they started getting better. I do not have much factual knowledge of cricket before the 1980s tbh.
How was SL's start?
BD has disappointed me a lot of times when they just act like they have already forfeited the game. But there has still been encouraging improvement in the last few years. They are not as easy to beat anymore. The win loss ratio might still suk but I dont think they you can just roll over them anymore.
Re: England v Bangladesh
^ They were all local players
In another 5-10 years they should become very competitive.
We hear that every time they win a match. They'll be lucky if they get another victory this year.
I know people love to make fun of BD cuz they suk.. but their rate of improvement is much better than India or Pakistan's when they started playing International cricket.

BD has been the biggest disappointment in test cricket. No nation has fared that badly after being given test status. They are just not upto the par.
Re: England v Bangladesh
Ehsan... maybe we expect way too much for a team that JUST got test status. I dont really expect them to start beating major teams right away specially in tests. But they have become harder to beat than a few years ago. That's the improvement.
I do agree that on a lot of occasions they have been extremely disappointing..
I do not think Bangladesh are ready for tests yet.
They might win the odd ODI or T20 against a quality side…but the same is true of countries like Kenya and Ireland
Zimbabwe too should not be playing test cricket IMO
http://www.howstat.com.au/cricket/Statistics/Matches/MatchListCountry.asp?A=ZIM
8 wins and 49 losses in 83 tests since 1992
The above should also reduce test workload and player burnout
Test cricket should be confined to the 'original' 8 (used to be 7 but Sri Lanka have vindicated their test status with their performance over the years) Test Nations
Re: England v Bangladesh
Maybe ICC should set up a test league with BD ZIM KENYA etc..
Re: England v Bangladesh
First time victory against England in 10 years
…
i think they ve won only 3 test matches … one against Zimbabve and two against WI (club class team) … anyway they can feel proud to beat WI in their home land by 2-0 ![]()
Re: England v Bangladesh
zimbabve came into cricketing world aftr WC 92 and by end of 2000 they had beaten most of test playing nations many times..But BD is poor in this regard
Re: England v Bangladesh
England scored 347/7 off their 50 overs and BD are struggling at 131/7 off 29.2 overs. Now that is the BD we know.
