** wowwww  :k: that’s a mamoth total, congrats’ to g. smith, his first senior tour of england and he scores the highest innings at edgbaston of 277 surpassing all record innings at edgbaston cricket ground… **

wat ever happened to james anderson lol thier pace man  i didnt know bowling in mid 80’s was pace

I hope English bowlers will be mutch more competitive in the next matches.

wow, there was a window of opportunity for SA to go for the kill and enforce the follow-on after Vaughan and Stewart fell quickly (at 311-6), but Flintoff came up with yet another agressive innings.

He’s having a fine season and looks a totally changed player from before. Much like Andy Symonds exibited earlier this yr (ironically a similar mould of a player). good for the game. :k:

The weather did indeed save England from going behind in the series first up - They still may though as they are still short of the target to avoid following on(21 runs I think) - But 156 knock from Michael Vaughan has just about saved their asses.

I have to admit it was a pretty good performance from Graeme Smith - I guess the Nasser Hussian’s comments really fired him up and he replied in the best possible way - Congratualtions to him in scoring the highest ever innings by a South African player and the second highest ever score at Edgebaston - Not to mention South Africa’s highest ever total against England which he led.

Anyway it should make an interesting final day play - Can England avoid the follow on and save the match? If they lose the first game then I think they won’t be able to win the series - I don’t think they have it in them to come back from behind.

Your wish/prediction came true, seems like Hussain heard you:)

Ahhh - Have you guys seen the frustration on Graeme Smith’s face when Ashley Giles saved England from the follow-on; and bowled Smith out in the second-inning? :hehe: I admit England would have lost the first Test Match - Rain just saved our ass!

Thank you, Lord.

:smokin2:

Yeah South Africa might have won it , if rain wouldn't have come.

Gough quits Test Cricket

Kallis returns to SA Squad

Oh dear… More problems for England selectors – Since Gough has gone, it will give a chance to Kabir Ali – but as Kallis will be back for the 3rd Test, Graham Thrope’s inclusion in the team has become even more necessary.

:smokin2:

I don't think England have any shortage of Gough like mediocore medium fast bowlers, they have the likes of Hoggard, Kirtley, Ormond, Silverwood, Sidebottom, lining up to get a chance of being spanked by Graham Smith.
Return of Kallis means judgement day for England, doesn't matter if they bring back Thorpe or not, England is going down.

Well the Gough retirement was looking more and more likely - I guess his knee just couldn’t take anymore pressure. Ah well - as for Jaques Kallis returning to the side well Lord help England as they will certainly need it!

As for who will replace Gough well it’s looking more and more like being James Ormond of Surrey or Steve Kirtly - another screw up in the selection! :smack: Why the England selectors won’t choose Kabir Ali is beyond me - He is undoubtedly one of the best bowlers playing County Cricket in England at the moment - unless of course he’s illegible to play for England but I doubt that very much.

:smokin2:

^^ talha i agree kabir Ali has raw talent he should be considered more often, he is a gr8 bowler, i wish pak made a move for him...but 2 late...
:(

at the end of this test series, we'll see that whole english teams has gone into retirement including sobbing-sobi :~)

:hehe: :hehe: :hehe: I wonder where he is hiding

still waiting for sobbing-sobi to make an appearance in this thread and bless us all with her england-praising sermons even though they are down into the slumps :~)

Sobbing sobi is gonna be mighty pissed when she reads this..:hehe:

Smith gets England Call

England have picked rookie Kent batsman Ed Smith for the third Test against South Africa with Lancashire seamer Glen Chapple and Worcestershire spinner Gareth Batty also named in a 13-man squad.

With Darren Gough retiring, Chapple will compete with James Kirtley for the seam-bowling spot, with Batty likely to miss out unless England feel his claims are stronger than Ashley Giles’s.

The selectors have gone for Smith, rather than Graham Thorpe, under an injury cloud, or the tried and tested Robert Key or John Crawley because they feel he is in prime form.

Surrey seamer James Ormond might also have come into the squad instead of Chapple, but he was also suffering an injury.

Meanwhile, veterans Alec Stewart and Nasser Hussain, as expected, retain their spots in the middle order, with Stewart again keeping wicket.

Commenting on the squad, selector Geoff Miller said, "We were looking for continuity as much as possible.

"And even though we didn’t perform well in the first two npower Tests the players we picked we naturally feel are the best to play for England.

"Ed Smith is in prime form and fully deserves his chance having hit six centuries for Kent this year.

"He will play in place of Anthony McGrath who did very well against Zimbabwe but struggled a bit with his form against South Africa.

"He has been an excellent team man and hopefully he will resurrect his form in county cricket - he is certainly not out of our thoughts for future England team selections.

“And finally we have picked Gareth Batty and Glen Chapple as extra spin and quick bowling options, both of whom have performed well this season for their respective counties.”

**England squad: Michael Vaughan (captain), James Anderson (Lancashire), Gareth Batty (Worcestershire), Mark Butcher (Surrey), Glen Chapple (Lancashire), Andrew Flintoff (Lancashire), Ashley Giles (Warwickshire), Stephen Harmison (Durham), Nasser Hussain (Essex), James Kirtley (Sussex), Ed Smith (Kent), Alec Stewart (Surrey), Marcus Trescothick (Somerset). **

Poor Graham Thrope still faces injuries. :frowning:

Oh dear Lord - what the hell were the England Selectors thinking I’m not even gonna bother to try and analyse this - This squad looks even more terrible than the previous ones! Why have they named 3 new players in the squad? - And why have they left others in the side when they should have been the ones who should have been replaced? Ashley Giles for one certainly shouldn’t be in this side - surely England must have a better first choice spin bowler - and if Glenn is the answer then why keep Ashley Giles in the squad? I mean surely they ain’t gonna go with 3 major spin bowlers in a match, right? - I think dropping Anthony McGrath was the right thing to do - but instead of bringing Stephen Harmison into the side they should have brought in Kabir Ali as the main seam bowler.

Anyway I guess England are gonna learn the hard way this time.
