LONDON: England and Pakistan both have a chance of claiming the third spot in the ICC Test Championship table going into the final matches of their current series in the West Indies and Pakistan.
A win or draw in the final Test against the West Indies in Antigua will lift England to the third place in the table unless Pakistan wins its final match in Rawalpindi against India.
Victory in Antigua would complete a 4-0 series whitewash and boost England’s rating from 101 to 104 while a drawn final match will push England’s rating to 103.
Either outcome will be enough to guarantee that England move up the table to the third spot unless Pakistan can win the decisive match of its home series against India.
If Pakistan wins in Rawalpindi, it will take the series 2-1 and hold on to the third spot with a rating of 105.
A draw will leave the series tied and Pakistan’s rating will remain on 102 - the same as it was before the series started in Multan March 28.
India’s rating was boosted from 95 to 100 by its strong showing in the recent drawn series against runaway leaders Australia. It now needs to win the final match in Pakistan to climb above its neighbour in the ICC table for the first time since August 2003.
A 2-1 series win for India would lift its rating to 102 while Pakistan’s rating would slide to 99.
Pakistan’s recent Test record is very strong.
The opening Test of the series against India was the first match it had lost since going down 2-0 to South Africa in January 2003. Over this time, it has steadily climbed from eighth to third in the standings.
India should play a couple of series with Bangladesh and they will be right up there...
These rankings are ridiculous to say the least... to think that a team like England's should be above India and Sri Lanka... beating a team of amateurs like West Indies should not count.
Nor entirely true some1.Though I agree this is not the best method to rank team but it is not as flawed as you think. There is little bit of intelligene in the ranking system. If you look at recent record you would see England did pretty good if better than India .
talking about this WI series. Juts for your Info when indian visted them they lost 2-1 and AUS also couldnot beat them as comprehensivley as England.
This might help http://usa.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/NATIONAL/ICC/RATINGS/ICCTC/RESULTS.html
Also..beating BANG wont give India as much advantage as you think it would.
I would pretty much agree with the Ranking by ICC. Its almost correct.fact that NZL,PAK,INDI and ENG are so close to each other means that they pretty much equal in Tets matches.

Better suggest that to the BCCI who just told that the BD-Tour will not take place ...... means India will've to do it the Hardway ...... by Beating Pakistan or SA later in the year ...... BTW i would bet on a climbing for INDIA as SA has the worst record when it comes to playing Spin ...... when Shoiab malik can take test Wickets against SA than India can for sure
f&b, I admit not being highly conversant about how these rankings are decided.
Thanks for the explanation but I would still like to get the details - like how much more credit a team gets when it draws a series with Australia (in Australia) as compared to somebody winning 3-0 against Bangladesh.
One more thing, West Indies team today is much worse than it was a few years ago (when India lost to them)- not to say that they were very good at that time… but today’s West Indies team is a joke…winning against them should be akeen to winning against BD.
