England not to play a Test at Karachi

The England Cricket Board has refused to play a Test match at Karachi on England’s winter tour of Pakistan owing to security reasons. While confirming this Shaharyar Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan board, said that England didn’t want to spend a week in Karachi but added that there was a possibility of staging a one-day international there.

Karachi has been a contentious venue on several teams’ itineraries in the recent past, and the suicide bomb attack earlier this week and subsequent rioting by angry protesters might well have exacerbated England’s concerns. Australia, West Indies, South Africa, New Zealand and India had all declined to play a Test match in Karachi earlier, and since the 2002 bombing outside the New Zealand team’s hotel, which forced the tour to be abandoned midway, the only two countries to have played a Test there are Bangladesh (2003) and Sri Lanka (2004).

Shaharyar, who met David Morgan, the ECB chairman, in London, admitted that it would be difficult to convince England to play a Test at Karachi. “They have conveyed to us that while they don’t feel there is any direct threat to their players in Karachi, they don’t want to be caught in a crossfire as they have reservations over the atmosphere in the city,” he was quoted as saying in The News, a Pakistan-based daily. “Their main concern is that if they play a Test it would mean they would have to stay for a week in Karachi and they are not comfortable with that prospect. We have started looking at the possibility of just hosting a one-day International against them in the city.”

England’s tour to Pakistan, which includes three Tests and five one-day internationals, is scheduled to start from October 22 and the Pakistan board had sent the ECB a proposed itinerary in which they had suggested a Test and an ODI in Karachi but had left out Peshawar, another venue that several teams have shown reluctance to tour, out of the schedule. “The proposed venues were discussed with Morgan,” said Shaharyar, “and what we have suggested to them is they send a security delegation to Pakistan to see for themselves there should be no security concerns for their players while in Pakistan.”

He added that the ECB would confirm dates of the delegation’s visit to Pakistan by Monday and said he had given all security assurances to the ECB about playing in Karachi. Shaharyar said that if Karachi was ruled out as a Test centre, the board would then choose from Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi and Multan to host the three Tests against England.

Re: England not to play a Test at Karachi

Re: England not to play a Test at Karachi

Lanaat hai PCB per jo duniya ka sab say kamzoor board hai..........Karachi sab say bara city pakistan ka aur us ko test matches say dur rakha jata hai...........PCB ko force kerna chahiye.....Har match har test har ODI har Final sirf lahore mai why ? Karachi say hamesha ziaatee ki gai hai.

Re: England not to play a Test at Karachi

It could be in Cheechokimalian for all I care. The fact is there aren't many cricket grounds in Pakistan. If you take Karachi and Peshawar out of the equation, you're left with Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, and Faisalabad. Out of these, Lahore is the biggest hence it gets the finals. It's not a question of PCB being weak... PCB needs to hold ANY international matches come what may. Not many teams are willing to come to Pakistan, and I don't blame them.

Here we go again,,,,

Re: England not to play a Test at Karachi

Sheikhupura is always a choice.

Re: England not to play a Test at Karachi

I guess it is very unfortunate that these teams always have concerns on centers in Pakistan. India was not too far from Pak in past but everyone was willing to play there.
I agree with thePakiguy that our board is very week if some years back they did not move the series out to Sri Lanka and Sharjah there would be no problem. They should have taken stronger stance at that time.

Re: England not to play a Test at Karachi

Laanat on PCB indeed. There should be a test match in Peshawer and Karachi in every series.

Re: England not to play a Test at Karachi

Whats the big hooplah. As if the recent KFC burning, mobs and other lawlessness is not enough to open our eyes, that at present Karachi is definitely not the most secure city in the world. I think its the same as Pakistan team not wanting to play a test in Ahmadabad. Didn't we all said at that time that if our team doesn't want to play there, then why force them? Whats good for the geese is good for the gander. Lets get off the high-horse and hope for a great series in November.

Re: England not to play a Test at Karachi

What I don't understand is why these white idiots never want to play in Peshawer. There have not been any recent blasts or anything like that over there.

Re: England not to play a Test at Karachi

It’s all (or almost) about Money my dear … India offers the biggest Market for Cricket … and Players like to go there coz that’s where a part (sometimes big part) of their income comes from … Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Inzi, Shoaib Akhtar, Brett Lee, Gillespie, Steve Waugh … just to name a few … so everyone likes to go there even if a bomb goes up just like last year before Aussies toured India … Imagine it would’ve been in Pakistan … they would’ve canceled the tour … But to be honest Pakistan don’t enjoy the best reputation since 9/11 + the standoff with India in 2002 … i’m sure once we’ve a bigger market we’ll be able to attract foreign teams to play anywhere WE WANT and where THEY WANT

Re: England not to play a Test at Karachi

Exactly.

Re: England not to play a Test at Karachi

Lets not discuss karachi and lahore guys. HOwever karachi has been extremely unlucky in terms of cricket matches specially in the last 3-4 years. Whatever the reasons are, the bottom line is PCB should hve the balls to take a firm stand in convincing other boards. We get ****ty treatment and hospitality when we go outside in responce to the VIP treatment we give to the other teams. shame on PCB
