Which university/college in your opinion offers the best undergraduate courses? Which specialization (Electronics, Mechanical, Chemical, Textile) do you guys reckon is on the upswing and will have a viable job market in 3-4 years?
How difficult is it to get admitted [and score well on the entry test] into NUST and UET (compared with GIKI) if one is from a GCE (O-Levels and A-Levels) background?

Lastly, is anyone thinking of going to an engineering school (inside Pakistan) for the fall 2006 session? I’ll be interested in hearing about your choices of specializations and universities and the method of preperation (if any :p) for the entry tests.

All experiences, opinions and suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance. :slight_smile:

well ...various ascpects for all of 'em
PART I
in terms of Educational expenses...
1. GIKI(most xpensive almost rupees 2.25 lakhs per annum)
2. NUST(yeah to sum extent yes)
3.UET,Lhr/NED(cheapest almost to the extent of Rupees 15K per annum)

in terms of location
1. UET,Lhr( in the heart of lahore easy access to all punjab)
2.NED (best option for the ppl of khi)
3.GIKI(if you want to live away frm all the worries n cares of pak)

in terms of recognition
1.UET,Lhr(roots go back to 1887 started as maclagan engg. college the first eng. college in pak,got the uni. status in 1961...acc. to a survey 55% of paki engineers wrkn abroad r frm UET,Lhr....sum UETIANs are even teachin in LUMS,GIKI as well Dr. shahid bookhari etc..Bsc. engg recognized all over n many get admissions in US top 20 uni's for MS...most of the Punjab market is dominated by them.

2.NED
Oldest on the other side i.e karachi...same as UET,Lhr a govt. funded uni. talented students frm the grass root level ...mostly dominating in Sindh..u can find these gradutaes in P&G,Unilever,YAMAHA,AdamJee,Indus Motors(Corolla) but only on sindh..

3.NUSt
based in rwp/khi/... so u neva knw whr r u gonna end up ...under sttrict military rules...proper haircut,clean shaves/islami. beard....neat n tidy ...almost as if ur in a cadet college with every***** possible rule...affiliation with western michigan uni..so chances of credit transfers very high..relatively less market presence

4.GIKI
new kid on the block....but considered as the best lately...highly educated faculty...gr8 infrastructure...gud student/faculty ratio....up2date labs...heavily funded by the private sector...which in turn opens up more opp. for the GIKIANs....market presence mostly in MNC's but exceptions are there as everwhr...limited faculties not a UNIversity but an institute...students mostly frm the upper class of society...

well ill be able to discuss only abt UET & GIKI as ive spent ma time in both of these engg skools..

In iterms of Placement
a) GIKI
Very strong connections with the MNC's operating locally so like they recruit students frm this institue..usually they have their tests n interviews at GIKI so like ull find them in P&G,ICI,Schlumberger,PTC,ENGRO,BP,BHP..etc etc n the list goes on...helps in findin them internships at these companies during their undergraduate program....job placement almost becomes 70-80% w/n the first 3 months reason being well offcourse the less no. of students per faculty as compared to other unis...

b)UET,lhr
well not interconnected with the MNC's but ull find uetians in evry corner of the country/abroad be it a small scale industry or be it the likes of Nestle,Unilever,ICI,P&G,Schlumberger,Ericsson,Nokia,....etcetc...to Heavy mechanical complex,pakistan railways , wapda, sparco which are included in the govt. sector ..reason being the gradutes passin out evry year are 3 times more than the GIKIans

in terms of Technologies
a) GIKI
has a limited no. of them they include...electronics,mechanical,metallurgy,computer sciences n humanities n one or two more depts..

b)UET,lhr

u name it they have it
Civil,electrical,mechanical,industrial/manufacturing,mechatronics,chemical,petroleum,mining,
architecture,CS,geological,miningcity/regional planning.....etc.etc...

In terms of LIFE @ these schools of engg.
a)GIKI
Altough there are a no. of student clubs like dramatix,music,photography,hiking,adventure,literary,
debating etc etc ..societies..which are active all round the year but still theres sumthn tht is missin like most of the guys look to be frustrated as they are far away frm the city with very few GURLs ..yeah there are 6 boys hostels n only one gurls hostel...;)...so like sumtimes u feel like runing out of thr if u dont make get sum gud friends.. no outings even no weekends cos like its a 2.5 hrs drive to RWp frm thr...

b)UET,Lhr
well...apart frm studies u can feel the esence of the real lahore n y they always say tht lore lore ae ...lore lore ae...concerts/theatre festivals/excellent food/cricket maches/shopping/movies ....all included in the UET package..;)

I know for Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Punjab University is rated #1.

Well..yeah though there is a chemical engg. dept and petroleum deptt. in PU as well but usually most of the dominating professionals in the industry are frm UET,Lhr in both the fields respectively as compared to any other univ. in pak..though my uncle is from PU but still he rates UET's Chemical engg. the best in town nowadays..moreover PU has just one discipline catering the needs of technology which dosent makes ne sense to me..
But one thing's for sure oppurtunities for Chemical engg. are the least in Pak as compared to electrical,electronics,mechatronics,mechanical...

Chemical Engineers have ample opportunities in Pakistan. In Textile & paint/chemical industry. Pakistan has quite a few big Textile companies employing Chemical Engineers.

Daar it does not matter what your Uncle rate. The labs and faculty at Punjab University are far more better than UET I am only talking about CHE. Its true that there is only one engg. discipline and thats why it has a better industrial positioning than the UET graduates. Most of the key managerial positions and the engg. positions at the leading companies like ICI, FFC, PARCO and Unilever are held by the PU Chemical Engg. graduates. Now there is a new department called bichemistry that is working with the Chemical engg dept to produce the graduates in biochemical engg.

I guess most of the people here dont even know that PU has an engineering department but I guess the teaching standard at PU engineering dept. is far better than UET and thats why they have high number of enginners in the key Industries throughout Pakistan. For your info. 24 Profs. there out of 28 are foriegn PhD's.

Yes these days the oppertunities for the Chemical Engineers are less than the Electonics and ME's but at the same time a lot less number of CHE's graduate per year so that does not make much difference.

Ive worked for DESCON and ive been to ICI,FFC,NRL for shutdowns though im not a chemical engg. but being in touch with all the MNC's in Pak as our clientle, ive been in touch with most of the engineers in these companies as well...yes ive heard and ive even met the graduates of PU but they very few students from PU now make it into theses big fishes...yeah i agree that some of the few personnels are the key personels in sum companies kyun k PU's dept. had been started quite earlier than UET but thts not the case for the last 5-6 years and pls. talkin bout FFC wahan tou saray Fauji bhetay hain ooper aur jo Process engg. k head hain he's frm UET, i dunno but PU but yes UNILEVER,P&G,ENGRO all have their tests conducted in UET and they recruit students frm thr..moreover i know for sure many of 'em wrkin for Schlumberger,Packages,CPCC,ENI(lasmo),OMV,BP...

lol..only 24 out of 28....just pls. have a look at UET's 2005 prospectus as the chemical engg dept. in UET irrespective of the fact tht there are a hell of differnt. depts.chemical engg dept. has the highest number of foreign PH.d's

i dunno much abt the biochemical engg. stuff goin on but talkin about biomedical engg. well the pre requisite for it is either you shud be a MBBS or you shud be an electronics/mechatronics graduate, no way any chemical engg. cud be in it.

students of both the universities are talented but this is a very well known fact that every student first tries to get an admission in UET but if he fails he then opts for PU ..UET is always prefered for chemical engg. , if ur a chem. engg. even you wud've first tried to get an admission ova there and thts for sure.

No. X , i dunno anything about unis in pak but one of my cousins went to UET and another one to NUST for eng. and now both of them got really cool jobs.
