Engineering Disciplines Selection

hello everyone!!!
Firstly a li’l about me:

I have completed my Fsc, recently and have alhamdolilah cleared the UET entrance test held on 24 Aug, 2008 successfully. Before that I have also cleared the NUST entrance test..

Now I have the option to opt the following fields:
Avionics Engg (NUST)
Mechatronics Engg (UET)
Electrical Engg (UET)
I m not sure which one of the above fields to choose…
I wud love if anyone cud guide me in this respect…
But jaldiiii I have only a day or two to take the decision…

well... you need to tell us a little more about your interests and aptitude... what made you short-list the above disciplines... what types of extra-curricular science projects etc. have you been involved with... is there anyone else in the family that has influenced your decisions and can act as a good mentor... etc.

i feel myself more close to mechanics than electrical,,, but as i have already mentioned people around me say that electrical is the best one probably coz it has the highest merit...
however i need a neutral reply irrespective of my aptitude n interest.. I have read a lot about avionics n mechatronics but i am certainly not sure about their future...

Their future in pakistan....

Re: Engineering Disciplines Selection

I dont know but i personally saw that amongst the lot, the electronics engineering option at NUST (at EME college back then) was the best that they offered.

Spock and other guppies who’re in the field would be able to advise you better on this but in response to your request for*** “a neutral reply irrespective of my aptitude n interest”***, I’d just like to say that this may not be the right approach to determining what is going to be a major life decision for you. I’ve met quite a few people who chose a career path based on others’ recommendations but had regrets later about not going with their own preferences. For some, they sought to further advance their qualifications to suite their interests while others couldn’t do so.

My point here is that with a field like engineering, and selecting a discipline upfront, you’re already sort of bound into a specialization and although it may be possible to switch disciplines in your second year, there would be some penalties in terms of course credits that won’t be transferred etc. – so in a case like this, it helps to do your due diligence… ask around for others’ opinions by all means but don’t let it override your own preferences and gut feel.

Re: Engineering Disciplines Selection

^ True, also one thing I wanted to point out. In most schools in the US and Canada, if you enter the pre-engineering program, the first year is pretty much the same for all disciplines, and you can pick between any specific form of engineering without losing any credit hours. In NUST, that is not the case! You have to be absolutely sure that what you are getting into is the right discipline, or you will have to start over again.

Re: Engineering Disciplines Selection

Avionics Engg (NUST)

From what I know about the avionics program in Risalpur, academics aside, the military styled ragra over there is pretty hard. So if you are the sort of person that is only interested in academics and not the so called 'character building' stay away from Risalpur! I personally remember some guys who got transferred over from CAE Risalpur to EME College and were offering shukraney key naffalz just because some peeps vacated their seats just because test results from other schools came out, and this gave them a chance to go fill up the vacated seats at higher merit numbers.

Wel By*** "a neutral reply irrespective of my aptitude n interest***" i never meant dat i m going to take a decision against my interests. However i just wanted to know the future of mechatronics, electrical n avionics engg in pakistan..

Wel thanx 4 ur comments... Can u plz further guide me If i go through this rigorous routine ar CAE risalpur for 4 years,,,, wat wud i get after that... in other word wat is the future of avionics engg in pakistan..

Re: Engineering Disciplines Selection

^ Unfortunately I lost in touch with acquaintances over there, so I am not sure where exactly they are working, but I do know they all have good jobs. Some of them work for Air Blue, an airliner that was started by Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

e

you can do it better

Well thanx to everyone who shared his/her valuable thoughts...
Uet lhr has finally displayed its 1st merit list last nite. i have been selected in mechatronics engg (my 1st preference), n i have decided to opt it..

Plz do give ur coments on ma decision???

Thanx.

Re: Engineering Disciplines Selection

I had some friends in the NUST mechatronics program. One thing though, while the discipline is very good, i.e. a unique blend of electrical and mechanical engineering, many of them didnt find suitable jobs in Pakistan based on their major, and had to deviate into IT or elec. engineering. The latter might seem alright but if you want to work as an Elec E, might as go for that degree instead as your base will be stronger. This is because robotics in Pakistan is as good as nothing, and automation, well theres been some production facilites set up so you might see some use there. The ones that came abroad are going for their masters right now, mostly in robotics and are doing well.

BUT I still think its a better choice than CAE Risalpur!

i know a lot of guys who either did it (including my brother) or r doing it , so as for future stability , they either have to serve for PAF / government or for an airline ,however i've heard of other places & ongoing projects too ( b/w pak + china )which offer nice jobs to them.........in short there r many graduates in this field who're in pakistan and earning pretty good.
best of luck for what u've opted , may u have a brighter future.
