**Not true.. *There is the concept of engagement...
**are u talking about the process of getting engaged or the "engagement ceremony" where by there is a function, exchange of rings, monies and gifts are showered and then they are assumed mangetars to each other? *
There are mixed views about the other little things, some scholars say they are allowed as long as they don't contradict Islam and u don't take it too seriously and aren't too lavish/extravagant whilst others say it's haram as it's imitating the kuffar and so on..

as far as i know islam does NOT allow 'engagement ceremonies' that we know of...the ONLY thing that is required is nikaah...b4 that, technically, boy and girl are NOT FREE to meet ... they are allowed only once to see each other in the presence of elders for the sole intention of marriage. there is NO concept of 'mangetars' whatsoever...

I follow the opinion that an engagement party (that's prob the wrong word tho lol) is allowed but not if it's all based around the ring etc the way Christians do it.. I know some Muslims even believe engagement rings themselves are haram but again I follow the opinion that they're ok in principle as long as you don't place too much importance on them and so on.. I also believe the boy and girl are allowed meet with others there (which there obviously would be at an engagement party).. To me that stuff is just personal preference and like u said nikkah is the only thing which is required.. I know there are a lot of differences of opinion on what is and isn't allowed in terms of an 'engagement'.. There is loads of info on it on Sunnipath and Islam Q&A..
They need not be lavish, and I don't want to delve into the wrong/right analysis of it, but I really like engagements. I think the engagement's my favorite part out of all the events/traditions (others that also aren't recognized by Islam) that lead up to a marriage. Not a fan of really long engagements though.
