Engagements

all right people, i really need all the help i can get on this…so if ne one here knows what Islam says on engagement plz tell me, and plz it would really help if u had it quoted or something. thanx a bunch.

I think where it is not prohibited, it also doesn't has any status, i mean your fiancee is a na mahrem to you. I got two sources on it.

1)Engagement between a man and a woman is a social tradition of declaring the intent (and desire) of marriage between two persons. Such tradition is not prohibited by Islam. The mere fact that such tradition is not prohibited by the Shari`ah renders it 'allowed'. Any procedure or method, mutually agreed upon by the two families and considered acceptable by the society may be adopted, provided that this form/procedure does not entail anything contrary to the moral and ethical teachings of Islam.

2)Shari'ah does not recognise contemporary forms of engagements where exorbitant amounts of monies is spent on the occasion. However, the angagement is a confirmation to marry. At that stage, theboy and girl are still strangers to one another in that they cannot communicate with oneanother.
The premarital outings after the engagement is strictly prohibited in Shari'ah. Often, such engagements break up leaving a devastating effect on the parties and in particular, the 'used' fiancée.

I hope this helps.

thanx Wiseone..... :)

yeah thanx wise one, that really helps. it's pretty much what i thought it to be before. i mean i understand that Islam would give that much permission to someone so that they have an idea of what they r getting into. but i know Islam would never allow the kinda things people do when they're engaged nowdays. because until ur married he's nonmehram to u, therefore all the rules still apply. correct me if im wrong but i really dont think that the only diff between engagement and marriage in Islam is sex.

what i meant was that now days poeple who r engaged do everything that married couples do except u know what. and they say that its ok. and im pretty sure that its not. talking and laughing excessively with each other alone, holding hands at the mall, talking on the phone for hours, and going out to restaurants, staring at each other too much, are also considered wrong as well. right? that was teh point and most people just dont get it.

yep agree with you. As i said they are na mehram so none of those activities are allowed i think.

PS:And the bit i find cheap is “staring at each other too much”. :smack:
