I’m planning my engagement event for July and need some help finding a venue. We’re planning on inviting approximately 30-40 people.
I’m looking for either a Halal Restaurant with a party/event room option or a reasonably priced banquet hall. Unfortunately, most Desi restaurants are lacking when it comes to ambiance / party space. I would appreciate any recommendations. So far, we’ve come across Sahara in Mississauga, not sure how the food taste, so if anyone has had any experience with this venue, do share.
When it comes to banquet halls, most require a minimum 50 people or charge an exorbitant amount to compensate for the lower head count. I checked out chandni gardens and the manager stated that he had a flat rate of $1500 for 1-50 people. If i invite 30 guests, it’s basically $50 a head!! Yikes.
At this point, i’m open to community centers and condo event rooms as well. If anyone has any suggestions or advice i would really appreciate it!
Also, If end up going with a community center type of venue, does anyone know of any good caterers?
Try Bombay Palace, they have a smaller room for engagements and they just renovated it. I went by few months back, and I like their menu. My wedding is at Bombay Palace in the bigger hall.
If you go for a community center type thing, you may not save yourself that much money since it comes up to about the same (did the math for my nikkah dawat). If it's only for 30-40 people, I'm sure anywhere you prefer they,ll accomodate that much.
i'd say condo party rooms are your best bet- they're often very nicely done up requiring minimal decor- and they don't cost nearly as much as halls or community centers. do you know any condo dwellers who would be open to helping you out there?
we used tandoori time on albion road for my brother's valima catering- they offered us an excellent menu for $16 per head and the food was a huge hit.
I've photographed an event in a condo party room and it turned out pretty good. It was nicely decorated and they had catered food. If cost is an issue I would suggest the condo

I've been to Sahara a couple of times - I like their food!
You could also try Affy's Grill (in Pickering)...they have a small but nice party room attached to the restaurant. Food is amazing
I had a really big issue with this when I tried to plan my engagement last summer. Either you can rent a room in a community centre, or a banquet hall, somehow there is nothing in between! The closest thing is a condo party room. You won't really get to have a seated dinner, but it's still a nice option. Esp if you know someone that lives in the Liberty Village or Park Lawn area... some of those condo's have their party room on top floor with spectacular lake/city views!
Also, look into smaller Holiday Inn's and Fairmont hotels. They usually have rooms they rent out in the $3-500 range that include table and chair set up with linens, tableware, flatware. You just cater the food. These rooms are much nicer than community centres. If you don't mind being in the ghetto, check out Golden Banquet Hall in Brampton. When I went to check it out, there was a refugee party going on so I was instantly turned off (sorry) but my fiance said his cousin's mehndi was there and it was decent... only $16/pp!
And check out the rental rooms at Professor's Lake. Just so you know what you're getting into, the room is not fabulous, and the walk up the stairs and into the hall feels like you are in an older community center, BUT the view is unbelievable... I mean it's actually really nice, very romantic at sunset. From the outside the building looks really nice esp with all the flowers and landscaping, and they include table and chair set up. It's like $50/hr I think.
After all this research I ended up having the engagement at home! And I was much happier as I had preferred a more intimate event with a limited guest list. With a party of 30-40, I really recommend doing it at home if you can and spend the venue savings on decorations, make it look fabulous!
Hey I wrote a part about halls in btwn the 1st and 2nd paragraph, where did it go??
Here it is: If you want banquet style, check out Bella Banquet or Platinum Convention Center, they both have smaller rooms and will give you a reasonable rate for small events. Also, daysto.com, Sarah, the sales mgr quoted me $21/pp for 60 ppl.
you can try Haveli Restaurant in Mississauga, or when I was looking at halls, the guy at Pearson Convention Center showed us that he has a small room to the side of the large halls, and that is where he conducts smaller parties, so you can call and ask about that.
