Ask your friend in a polite manner what he/she wants/needs. If they arent co-operating tell them you will get them something anyway so if they want something they can talk freely.

we got one of my friends a basket with the kama sutra, some sex toys, some lingerae, and other odds and ends. kinky stuff, basically. It was a joke, not meant for use...

Omg I wanted something appropriate, something she can open in front of her family! The wedding won’t be until another two years (after she’s completed her undergrad).

Get two gifts. One to show the family, and one indicating what she has to look forward to as a married woman :D

get something from VS for yourself - buy another gift like a manicure/pedicure package so she can get it done before her engagement, wrap it up in the VS box/bag to embarrass the heck out of her and when she opens it, tada! it is something different :D We did that at our friend's b'day and she turned all shades of red

My mom wouldnt mind if I get edible underwear or hot lingerae. I even got a belly dancing outfit with my mom.
