End of an Era

I know in my other thread I blamed Afridi’s massively overwhelming popularity for polluting the culture of street cricket where every kid wants to mindlessly hit the ball out of the park for a ‘beastly’ shot or dream about becoming the next Boom Boom achieve access to all that money and fame.

But truth to be told, once Afrid goes, you don’t have a single player that young generation would love to look up to. From producing world class athletes, game changing legends and larger than life superstars, what you are now really left with is some random pudgy looking 5’6 below average bits and pieces players who don’t even know why they’re selected. I struggle to remember their names because they all look at the same to me…no personalties, no character, no nothing.

In Pakistan despite the lack of facilities and opportunities, cricket has been kept alive on streets because at any given time, Pakistani team was blessed with players who managed to inspire a generation. This is how the great cricketing culture was sustained. It is quite awful to see how Pakistani cricket at the moment is without any role model of any sort to inspire youngsters.

Is cricket on the road to become another dead sport like squash and hockey in the country?

Actually no, ignore the last question. That’s border line wrist slitting. I’m a stubborn optimist and I do believe, things will get better…*.only if I join PCB. *

Re: End of an Era

Afridi probably is one of the last ones with enormous talent, crowd attraction after Shoaib Akhtar. But once Mohammad Amir comes back things will get better. In current team almost all the players are regulation players with no exceptional talent, everyone is 3.5-4.3 out of 10 if Shoaib Akhtar was 9 for people to look forward to a match. Misbah and Afridi are exceptions but in different ways, Misbah is looked at 'rescuer' every time the boat gets rocky while Afridi is looked upon as 'game changer'. Bowling is just pedestrian.

Re: End of an Era

Pedestrians are unsung heroes in the era of cheap gas prices and gas guzzlers.

Re: End of an Era

Lets hope Aamir is still the same!

Re: End of an Era

:insha: he will be, the talent was natural, not after getting training etc.
