that noted satirist Shafiq-ur-Rehman died on Sunday morning. I for one will not forget his books..
Maybe we can talk about what different people liked about his books and characters..
What a sad news! Just in the other thread we were talking about his books. He was one of my favorite Urdu humor writers.
I am going to re-read his books now.
Shafiq ur Rehman passed away? Ina Lillah wa Ina Aleha Tajawoon.
He was my favourite urdu author and I have read his books over and over.
My favourite character was Rufi, aka shaitan who reminded me of this cousin of mine at sometimes.
Some of my fav parts were when Shaitan decides that he will not wear glasses anymore and keeps running into things, ending with the infamous cricket match where the author had to drag him back and forth to complete the winning runs...
There was also this great piece about the guys going to a social club and the conversations that took place...some of the rowdy kids like the one playing the record and running around the turn table trying to read it reminded me of my youngest brother.
Who can forget the Mess Lanky lived in with people like moody jones, shorty etc. There was this part where shorty hates snowmen so he breaks them, so moody covered himself in sheets and ppl put snow on him so he looked like a snowman, when shorty tried to kick it the snowman attacked it. Their rivalries for a particular girl's attention and all.
I think that urdu has lost one of its most original and interesting authors.

I was hoping he would write some more...but it wasnot meant to be. Does anyone have a complete list of his writings? and also if u can classify them, some of his work is romance oriented..and some is pure mazah...lemme know fi u have it.

He was my fav mizzah'nigaar....his first book i read was hamaqateiN, which phoopo ji has given me for getting all A's in sixth grade.....and i still remember the first line i read...."Yeh unn dinooN ka zikar hei jab Roofi ke daaNt per bijli giri ":)...the story was "Neeli Jheel"....and the story still fascinates me the way it fascinated me when i was 11......
who can forget those characters....characters like Roofi, shaitaan, Nannhay miaN....(and nannhay miaN's ginti...1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,ghulaam,begum,baadshah...:) ke ghar mein cards buht khelay jatay thay)...and charactars like Ainak Apa, Razia, maqsood goRha.....and that mulazim...i forgot his name...ju roz khabarnaama style mein dua maanga kerta tha namaz ke baad....
