Encounters....I

It was 10:30. Everybody was asleep while I referred to as an Owl was awake, reading some stuff and flipping through the channels…This was, umm like after quite a few weeks that I sat down to watch T.V and that too with not much enthusiasm.
Trrrrring , trring … the telephone rang. Wonder who’s on the phone. bhai,a friend from university, khala… contemplating I threw my stuff on the sofa, turned off the T.V reached out and picked up the receiver.

Hello, a lady on the other end said… after the usual salam dua, she asked whether I am Mrs… Err, no, I am sorry she is sleeping, I replied.

AAp kon… she asked,
I am her daughter, Mi

Ohh, the lady gasped, hmm…

I interrupted her (puzzled..)Who are you, jee? How can I help you. Do u have any message that I can convey to my Ma.

Err, I was told by Mrs. … about you who was in turn informed by Mr. … who I believe is the father in-law of your aunt.(she sounded like a livey person, vivacious to be precise)totally enjoying the situation..

Ahh, i felt my heart sank… ‘Acha jee, Kis baray main’

heheh, the girl laughed, umm actually we are looking for a girl for our brother. So, we were told about you and…

I don’t want it, please stay away.. I wanted to say that but thinking it would not be appropriate, I kept quiet.. Finally I replied, why dont u call tomorrow and talk to my Ma about whatever you want to know…

Umm, kheheh, she laughed again. I was annoyed as well as a bit amused at the way she was laughing. …

Naheen na, aap he bata dain, should I send my brother tomorrow or ammi.
I think you should talk to my Ma, I retorted

Acha, tell me how tall you are , I mean your height? She asked as if I was a bakri…
I didn’t loose my temper fortunately but was furious..

What? that was my reposne…

Acha, I will send my ammii tomorrow to your place to meet up with you. she said
How much I wanted to tell her that I can’t think of anybody…BUT again fearful of my Ma’s wrath I kept quiet. I am thinking of becoming a :mash:

Mustered up some courage and told her firmly, 'please, don’t send ur ammi like that. We might be having some engagements tomorrow. Please ask her to talk to my ammi first. ’

kheheh, ok . I will give my ammi your number, ok.

Has it happened with anyone of you? How do you deal with such situations? If it would have been in my hands and given my rebellious nature, I would have gone ahead and asked in the same tone about her brother’s height, his occupation and his looks , the way she said that their demand was a girl with a fair complexion wasn’t something I really appreciated…kept quiet 'cuz of Ammi

What do you guys feel that the girls should have a right to question in turn while they are being asked all those things?

really i would have asked the same things to her.thats what i think one need to do coz when u dont knou anybody it is very indecent to ask personal questions that way.but given the status of women in our country that would have been a sure disaster bcoz what if they turn up t'morow n tell ammi that ur daughter spoke to me like that.but given that she had chosen to speak abut this at 10.30 at night itself showes that she is not credible. so, i think u should have blasted out right there. that would have been a memorable response.

its got to be the most annoying thing, why the hell do ppl start asking when ure not ready for it?? and treating u like a bakri :k: ,
u meet someones aunty, they keep staring at u, then she asks ure mum is this ure daughter shes very pretty and u know whats gonna happen from there

it makes u sick really, i mean i like the old aunties theyre so sweet but this is always the next step, they start asking whether ure engaged and telling u abt a guy who wants a gori girl who wants blahblahablah sounds ilke BS to me
i very much doubt a guy would describe in such graphic descriptions exactly what hed want to his aunty/mother

ure really upset and u cant do anything out of respect to ure parents
