What’s the best way to handle them, when you get an offer from somewhere, but your current employer wants to offer you something more to stay with them? I’ve read a couple of articles about this that said that it is something you should not do. Then again, those were by recruiters in whose interest it is that you take their offer. So what’s the deal with it from those with experience?
I think the way to rationalize it is if you are looking for jobs, just so you can get a counter offer from your current employer, then it's a bad idea. However, if you got a good offer, and only reason you are considering is because the compensation is better, then I would be honest and let my boss know that I am considering the offer only because of that reason. I would also say something like i have to say yes or no in couple of days, but i thought that i will inform you first. I will leave it there. If he wants to come back with a counter offer, then great. I will personally never ask for it.
Re: Employment counter offers
Right, but if he does come back with a counter offer, then is there any harm in considering it? This is what they were warning against in the articles I had seen on the topic (sorry, can't remember the exact source now).
I don't see any immediate harm, though they may try to compensate the counter offer by cutting down on your annual pay raise and bonuses in future. Probably I should read the article first
Re: Employment counter offers
Though probably not the particular one I read years ago, here are some that discuss the same type of thing:
Why You Should Never Accept A Counter Offer When You Resign - Forbes
Re: Employment counter offers
I think when you plan to leave your current job then it's better not to accept the counteroffer. The plan to move to another job should be well thought out. If all you want a raise then instead of looking for other opportunities, first discuss with the company to give you raise when you are refused then find another place. But that's me!
