Employer dictating what your wear at work ..

Would you allow your employer to dictate what make up or shoes or shirts you should be wearing into work or in meetings with clients?

Obviously basic rules regards dressing professionally or uniform and light make up are not under question here .

Its when , for example, Receptionists , get asked to do brighter make up and a specific level of heels etc

If an employer demands these kind of things , then what would you do?

Re: Employer dictating what your wear at work ..

If you need the job then you should be very agreeable, you can be right and not have a job. I feel that a receptionist is the face of the corporation and the way she presents herself should be as per corporate image.

Re: Employer dictating what your wear at work ..

you see , this phenomenon that we call “face of the …” is something that I have never agreed with. If I walk into a company’s office and see a receptionist all slick and looking like a model , I dont appreciate it , coz its like using a specific gender to become an eye candy !

I would rather prefer that i see professionally dressed , decently smart people in any position , be it receptionist or secretarial or any other position :biggthumb:

Re: Employer dictating what your wear at work ..

Dressing professionally but modestly imo is a balanced approach.

Shows you are serious about your work but are mature enough to know what is acceptable to you and can demonstrate that in the way you carry and present yourself to your employer. If an employer asked me to dress in a certain way that I was not comfortable with, I wouldn't. I have the skills and education to find another employer where I would be allowed to express myself the way I feel best.

Re: Employer dictating what your wear at work ..

So if you were a police officer, you wouldn't wear a uniform, if you worked at Macdonalds you wouldn't wear their uniform. The image employees project should be the image that is consistent with employers requirements. We just had one of our gorgeous area manager come back from matt and she was wearing a very short, tight leather skirt with her long fit legs on full display..I thought that was not consistent with her position and if I was the manager I would make her go home and wear sth professional.

Re: Employer dictating what your wear at work ..

I think the problem begins when for example , you dont want to wear heels , but the employer thinks its important that their female employees put on heels or a certain shade of make up etc .

Its more female oriented which causes furore.

Otherwise with a normal, decent uniform I dont see anyone in the world having a problem!

Re: Employer dictating what your wear at work ..

I would. The field I am in doesn’t require a uniform but we must dress professionally (No slacks, hats, jeans) which I have no problem with. What I don’t agree with is having an employer telling someone to wear inappropriate clothing, or dressing in a way that is ‘uncomfortable’ for the employee. I think people should have the opportunity to express themselves, their identity/culture/ faith through their clothing as long as there is a balance between that and the nature of the organization.

I applaud the people that stuck their ground to have some changes made to their ‘uniform’ so they could fulfill their work obligations to the best of their ability but also practice their faith.

Re: Employer dictating what your wear at work ..

Making people wear heels is sexist so of course, I am not going to side with that but at my previous career, this Lebanese girl was upset that she got reprimanded for wearing a very low neck blouse. Revealing was what made her comfortable and she was happy in fishnet stockings and skirt upto her toned butt, at work you get paid to project the values of the corporation and not yours. You can certainly express your values on your own time. Some corporations spend hundreds of millions creating a brand image and an employee’s personal expression should not be allowed to damage that brand.

This is too 90s. Surely the fear of lawsuits has taught enough lessons for this to be a non-issue now.

Today's crises are more like Jill who used to be Bobby until last week now wants to use the guys bathroom but still hasnt had her surgery. Can HR tell her to use the men's room for now?

Re: Employer dictating what your wear at work ..

I know grooming and dressing is not your gig, I was just dealing with a couple and the lady was wearing a filthy winter jacket and the oil oozing from her pores was indicative that she hadn't showered for a week yeah she has a right to dress that way but is she going to have a red carpet reception. Groomed people will get more cooperation. There is a reason they sell detergent and shampoo.

Re: Employer dictating what your wear at work ..

dude... you posted your pic. do you really want to talk of grooming? i would keep my mouth shut if i were you. <3

Not interested in queers, try the mail man lol...

Re: Employer dictating what your wear at work ..

In essence , I would do anything to discourage such brands . They are the ones making life difficult for so many others who want to live decently and modestly !

Re: Employer dictating what your wear at work ..

It is complicated CB, if people stop spending monies there would be armageddon and many will lose jobs. I work for an ethical company and they want employees to identify with the corporate values. In fact when we interview we like to make sure that employees values are in line with corporate values
