Emotions…is that the one of the thing that differentiates us from other species created by The Almighty.Eventhough our second cousins (the chimps) have shown high amount of emotions and some lesser mammals exhibit a lot of emotions too, For example Elephants have been observed to mourn the death of fellow elephant and also been seen to visit their bones even ahter some years…Hey I sound like I am doing some sort of a documentary.
Anyway,I always ponder why we,as humans feel emotions to warying degree…some feel the same emotion much less and some to a large extent. I know the nature /nurture is one of the reason that people say that could be the reason for the diversity…Wat do You guys think…Nature or NURTURE??..
Re: ....EMOTIONS...Nature or Nurture???
nature and nurture, both.
Re: ....EMOTIONS...Nature or Nurture???
I'm taking psychology this year and we've learned that the nature vs. nurture argument comes up a lot in various topics....I've come to the conclusion that it is - in ever case - a combination of both.
Re: ....EMOTIONS...Nature or Nurture???
^^ do u think so Phatima, there r some people in the same family, bought up by the same environment and everythings almost the same, one can be a sensitive person...while the other opposite...But I do think only a little role would be nurture...nature plays more signigicant role when it comes to emotions
Re: ....EMOTIONS...Nature or Nurture???
They've done studies where twins have been seperated at birth and they have noticed that some traits in the child directly correlate with the mother, whereas other things came from the foster parents.
Re: ....EMOTIONS...Nature or Nurture???
but I am talking about the extent of emotions...for example some people percieve the same set of events like maybe war in a country and react differently in terms of emotions...

Yes. My brother is very sensitive (in fact my entire family is) except me. For some odd reason, I have become very cold-hearted. I show no emotions to anything, I have to force myself. If someone is happy, I will be happy for him/her but I just can't show it. If someone is sad, I also feel sorry but can't show it no matter how much I try. I would like to change and be able to show emotions, but I don't know how I can accomplish that. I am afraid it may come back and hurt me one day as not crying when crying can help can be dangerous.

Re: …EMOTIONS…Nature or Nurture???
phati a lot of researchers, well known and renowned have come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as the nature nurture debate. both have a lot to do with development. it’s just that nature has sometimes has a lot to do with one trait, while nurture will have a lot to do with another. but both are shaping the human being.
ohh…as for the original post, emotions are nature. it’s just that the expression of them is determined by the culture and society in which one grows up

Re: …EMOTIONS…Nature or Nurture???
Emotional development is not just dependent on having the same parents, when you discuss nurture. ![]()
There comes ordinal number of a child in question…then the specific situation of the family at a specific stage n a lot more factors which can not be identical in most cases.
Like e.g…A is the eldest of 3 siblings…family enjoyed a good financial stability at the time when A started registering environment in her mind say around 3rd year of age. B was born in equally same stability time…but the mother was overwhelmed by the thought of caring for two. may be B was a bit fussy by ‘nature’ or perhaps A started being more fussy at that time…so this is definitely going to change the 'nurture part ’ for both even having the same parents.
I hope I made some sense.
In my opinion…nurture plays a bigger role…in forming a personna…as we know the Hadees sharif which means along the lines of,
Every child is born on ‘Fitrat’…then its his/her parents who turn him into a Muslim/christian/jew n all.
^ pardon me for not giving you the exact words o hadees…but i just had the meaning in my mind. ![]()

oh boy....did i made this thread die a premature death ??? :(
Re: ....EMOTIONS...Nature or Nurture???
Human beings like any creature have emotions thats nature...what we do with them is nurture...things like your upbringing, culture etc...
What seperates us from animal is not the fact that we have emotions its that we have ways of dealing with them...

U say u feel yet are unable to show..I would say that u r an introvert and for the showing your vulnerable side..that would be trusting enough to show them who u really r....and how much u really feel.We humans all mostly have that fear that the moment we may open up...it may turn out to be like a slap in the face..that mostly depends on who you have trusted and has let u down..:)..Conditioning basically...

By that I had meant for example 2 twins growing in the same environment..yet their temperament may be totally different...Nature is there ...not nurture...again becuz of temperamental differences...the mother would treat em differently too..
And for the Hadees....doesnt it say that Nature has given the baby a fitrat..
And btw...I was talking about the extent of Emotions one perso feel to a situation...while the twin may not Feel the same way...:)
