Emergency to be lifted in 2-3 weeks: Ch. Shujaat

**Emergency to be lifted in 2-3 weeks: Ch. Shujaat **

ISLAMABAD, Nov 6: Ruling Pakistan Muslim League president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has said that the state of emergency should not last more than three weeks.

“I’m sure it will end in two to three weeks as President Pervez Musharraf is aware of the consequences of long emergency rule,” he told Dawn here on Tuesday.

“Nobody is in favour of emergency. It was promulgated reluctantly by the chief of the army staff,” the PML chief said, rejecting some politicians’ view that it was a “virtual martial law”.

Asked if general elections would be held as planned earlier, he said that “postponing the elections may favour some individuals or parties but not us”. He did not elaborate.

Chaudhry Shujaat ruled out any possibility of a pre-poll arrangement with the Pakistan People’s Party. “This could be considered after the general elections in which we will be rivals,” he added.

“But we are ready to meet PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto and her aides to discuss steps which may help improve the political climate and ensure transition to full democracy,” he said.

Answering a question, he said the PML was fully geared to contest elections on the basis of its government’s performance.

Chaudhry Shujaat rejected opposition’s allegation that polls would not be held in a free, fair and transparent manner under President Gen Musharraf and that the ruling party would be allowed to rig them.

“Gone are the days when elections could be easily manipulated,” he said, adding that after the lifting of the state of emergency, political parties would start a fully-fledged election campaign.

Asked about Monday’s rumours relating to President Musharraf, the PML chief said the army was fully behind the president and, therefore, there was no question of his ouster. “This could be a wishful thinking of some people but I can assure you that Musharraf is not going anywhere”.

He said that the rumours had been spread by speculators and as a result people lost Rs186 billion in the stock market.

He said political parties, members of the civil society and print and electronic media should join hands for restoration of full democracy in Pakistan as early as possible.

APP ****: Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said that the PML and allied parties fully supported President Musharraf’s decision to impose emergency in national interest.

He was talking to PML president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain, Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao, Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani, Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid, Religious Affairs Minister Ijaz-ul-Haq, Law Minister Zahid Hamid, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr. Sher Afgan, State Minister for Information Tariq Azim and National Assembly chief whip Sardar Nasrullah Dareshak at the Prime Minister’s House.

So what will have been achieved in 3 weeks. The emergency was imposed because the country faced a terrorist threat, or so we are being told. Now are we being told that in 3 weeks time the threat would have disappeared? Taking the country to the brink of destruction just to remove a few chief justices who were going to rule on his illegal hold on power is all he would have achieved and that tells the whole story.

Re: Emergency to be lifted in 2-3 weeks: Ch. Shujaat

in 3 weeks

all opposition will be behind bars, or will be afraid to come out. lawyers and possibly student protests will be crushed

in 3 weeks

BB, who is free to roam all over the country, endangering lots of innocent lives in the process, will get sympathy vote of approval from people because she "stood" up for democracy and end of emergency rule (while all other political heads were quiet, well they were behind bars)

in 3 weeks

taliban flags will still be hoisted in swat, waziristan will still be a no-man's land, opium will still flow seemlessy thru pak-afghan border, terrorist threat will remain unchanged, "suicide bombing" will still be there

Re: Emergency to be lifted in 2-3 weeks: Ch. Shujaat

Mushy needs just 3 weeks to restore the writ of the Govt over the entire country. Amazing feat.

That said, I have come to realize that, in Pakistan, whatever anybody (other than Musharaff) says, it really amounts to nothing. That includes the PM of the country. So Chaudhary saab may say what he thinks...but unless Musharaff is quoted as saying it...it really does not have any weight. Others are mere "Yes-Men".

Even if Mushy had said it himself that in 3 weeks emergency would end, you still cant believe it, considering his past record

Re: Emergency to be lifted in 2-3 weeks: Ch. Shujaat

He already achieved a lot in last few days:

  1. He saved Prime Minister's ass from Court (court asked about who was responsible for sending out NS when Court had allowed his coming back)

  2. He saved his own nudity, he would've to remove his wardi as expected outcome of case against him (dual offices)

I have feeling that emergency, rather Martial Law is not going to get lifted soon. Depending on how the situation turns in near future, possibility of election is within next few months but could get postponed indefinitely.

Re: Emergency to be lifted in 2-3 weeks: Ch. Shujaat

in 3 weeks he’ll have all his FREE & FAIR JUDICIARY KE CHUMCHAY in place to make his HARAM KI KAMAI HALAL by legalizing everything from killing innocent civilians to making deals with corrupt politicians and keeping his uniform along with presidential elections which he won by a land slide. :halo: :nook:

Basically whatever Mushy did and planning on doing is for his n merely his own benefit. Learned great lesson from his Boss Bushy to run the government for their own advantage on the name of Terrorism.

Meh. I have half the mind to forget whatever is happening and check in again in 3 weeks to see if this fantasy really came true.

My hunch: They're crapping in their pants, since they've faced overwhelming opposition, and Mush probably figures "Well, this leaves me very little time to gain Swat and Wazirstan back".

I think the time for military rule in Pakistan is over. We've matured as a nation, and I don't think our people want to use it as an approach.

However, our community needs to stand more tight on the extremism issue. On this forum, across the internet, in the news - more people are obsessed about Musharraf and what he's doing than protesting about what crazy fanatics are doing to 1/4 of their country. I hope you guys realize that Swat is a beautiful area and a very touristy place, and the fact that Radio Mullah and his clique have taken it over is VERY worrisome!!!!!!

Its the same crap that happened in Afghanistan when the Taliban took over!

Re: Emergency to be lifted in 2-3 weeks: Ch. Shujaat

in 3 weeks only one thing will change, he will get aproval from the new SC for his nomination as president sorted.
thats what this emergency is all about, when that is acheived this will be ended cause they know its not going to help them any longer.

other things will stay the same, by having new SC agencies will be more free to pick up people and take action aggressively in SWAT and etc.

Re: Emergency to be lifted in 2-3 weeks: Ch. Shujaat

agencies are taking action in swat and waziristan or is it the army? how will the new lota SC help with this effort? explain that mi amour
