Emergency Preparedness

So…what have you done?
What have you stashed?
How have you stashed it?
Where have you stashed it?

Re: Emergency Preparedness

First Aid Kit under the kitchen sink
Fire extinguisher under the kitchen sink
Flash lights and extra batteries in the garage

Re: Emergency Preparedness

Several flashlights and batteries.

First Aid kits.

Fire extinguishers.

Dust masks.

Tool kit.

Whistle.

Tins upon tins of baked beans.

Blocks (and i mean big blocks) of Valrhona chocolate.

I want to buy an electric telegraph…but my morse code is a little rusty. :hmmm:

Re: Emergency Preparedness

I have two kits prepared.. one for shelter in place and one to go kit!

Shelter in place includes:

-I have six gallons of water stored in the basement.. I switch it with new gallons annually! (rule of thumb is 2 gallons of water/person and should have a three day supply)
- Thermal blanket, canned chick peas, canned soups and lots of other non perishable food in a bag under my bed (yes the can opener too)
- Flash light, hand cranked radio, and lots of extra batteries
-First Aid Kit (including some wet wipes)
- masks (surgical and N-95)
-candles and water proof match

To go bag..

-all of the above excluding water (in fact I picked up some packets of water from a seminar and stashed them away)
- extra pair of clothing, socks, and shoes
- some canned food with the can opener
- small bottle of household chlorine (I think I have a dropper in there too but dun remember exactly)

I also made a copy of all our travel documents, all insurance cards, credit cards etc (list of medication for my mom who visits us very often) and kept a copy in my travel bag and another copy with out of town family relatives in case we have to evacuate and/or lose the bag! I even have the emergency contact numbers for my friends in and out of state in case the emergency is local!

yes I do emergency preparedness consulting as a part time business :-D

 I’m surprised to see this thread even*, on a Pak forum

*Isn’t it true most of us don’t do this preparedness? hmmm

How man do you estimate do not follow?

Re: Emergency Preparedness

My target audience is usually the elderly population where I conduct seminars for emergency preparedness kits.. they listen and follow to the core of it!

I am more into conducting exercises for health departments in case of a public health emergency.. these preparedness kits are just a very small part of what we do :-)

hmm, what do the stats say, majority of population don't have such kits or 50/50?

Re: Emergency Preparedness

We have a couple of water gallons, cans of food, first aid kits, candles, emergency blankets, flashlights and extra batteries, in a box in one of our closets.

Re: Emergency Preparedness

What … really? :hayaa: ..

The only emergency I know is fire and break ins … For fire we have fire extinguishers and fire blankets … and for break ins , we have security alarms and police number on speed dial and a bat in every other room !

For personal emergencies , we have bandages , somewhere .. I know they are around here somewhere … and enough paracetamols :sahar02:

I guess I should admit , I am just not prepared for emergencies :teary2:

Re: Emergency Preparedness

^ me too C.B. I need to consult with Gemini.

Re: Emergency Preparedness

Are you guys preparing the kits looking at the surrounding environment or just a regular kit with the necessities?

Re: Emergency Preparedness

cricketplaya.. I dunno about national stats but I do know it's pretty common where I live for several reasons.. we are prone to blizzards, flood, and local emergencies so everyone taht I know of has an emergeny preparedness kit and the ones who dun, I bug them as much as possible!

Just recently our well's pump broke and guess what I saw almost everyone digging out the water gallons from the basements and cars etc.. it was fixed within 10 hours but we were all self sufficient. :-)

Mehnaz.. copy the list but add in drawing books, toys, crayons etc for the big man.. we will talk more if you woudl like :-)

Re: Emergency Preparedness

I sometimes keep a pair of spare shoes in my handbag.

Other than that. I dont have anything.

Not even plasters! Last time I cut my fingers I used sellotape!

Re: Emergency Preparedness

^ I can imagine you in an emergency....

"Forget the children...forget everything....just save my shoes!!!!!!!"

Re: Emergency Preparedness

when i first saw this, the first thing that came into mind was the freezer..where i keep frozen food for when guests come over unexpected and unannounced.

lol im so slow.

i do think we have a small fire extinguisher under the kitchen sink....other than that..i got nothing.

and so sad since im one of the team leads for emergency safety at work.

Re: Emergency Preparedness

^lol..same here.. I was thinking kebabs when it was meant to be fire extinguishers and batteries and what not :D

I just have panadol and band-aids :( but our building has fire extinguishers at each floor..so that counts?

Re: Emergency Preparedness

oh thank god mm...lol

fools never differ eh?

Re: Emergency Preparedness

nope.. great minds think alike :D

Re: Emergency Preparedness

Dua…is the only thing i have :bummer:

Ummm ALHUMDULILLAH we never faced any major disasters…but when I was living in a basement apartment it would flood frequently when it rained…only thing I kept was an umbrella and broom…thats it :bummer:

Re: Emergency Preparedness

I have been planning on putting a static and mobile kit together with the little one so that she knows what, where and how.

Since we have an expert amongst us I think GtG should guide us…what say GtG?
Should we use your list as a guideline or will you provide us with another?

and yes cricketplaya…you may be surprised to see this thread here…we were taught to learn and grow…regular desis are probably unlikely to have a kit ready…my family will not be classed as “regular desis”. :hoonh:
