I think you missed the point: "the National Assembly and Senate would meet and the presidential dual office law will be extended for six months. It is pertinent to mention here that the president’s dual office law will expire on November 15, 2007." That's why emergency being imposed. Period.

I have heard that Supreme Court is due to annouce its decision on Musharraf's case. SC will make the decision whether it was right for Musharraf to contest the election without giving up the army post. Do not know whether this is related to it or not. Moreover, media has been accused of spreding rumors of emergency in past.

good for musharraf. since he gets no credit for given us the most freedom we have ever had, its time for him to show what a bad-ass dictator is being all about. he should start by locking up all ghudaar politicians, journalists and judges providing moral support to jehadis. patriotic pakistanis will stand behind musharraf and pak's economic situation is such that it can withstand external pressure. shahbash.

^ Geo had reported "emergency in the offing" not too long ago when their was jirga taking place in Afghanistan... Condi called Mushy and emergency decision was discarded (or probably delayed till further notice as it seems looming again).

Imposing emergency might be a tall order now esp. with BB back... But according to the News, basic liberties will not be taken away, little if any curbs on media, etc.. So whats left?

Best option now is for Musharaf to hand of command to Kiani and let the Army focus on what it has to do... Holding both offices isnt going to help anyone.

PCO on the way any day

ISLAMABAD: The government is considering a rupture in the political transition underway in view of the rapidly deteriorating internal security situation in the country.

In this context, serious discussions are taking place to decide when to impose martial law in the country followed swiftly by a new provisional constitutional order (PCO).

Various options: High level sources told Daily Times that President General Pervez Musharraf is engaged in marathon sessions with his political and military advisors to examine various options on how to proceed ahead by holding the Constitution in abeyance. It has been learnt that the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) leadership is trying to persuade the president not to wind up the present political set-up because in that case the PML would also be a loser. “The PML is opposed to any pre-emptive step,” the sources said.

The sources said the PML leaders and some civilian and military security officials wanted the decision to wrap up the system to be put on hold until the Supreme Court decision on petitions challenging Gen Musharraf’s eligibility to contest the presidential election.

Quick change: However, the sources said, the top brass was opposed to any delay and want a quick change to establish the writ of the government before the law and order situation gets out of hand.

The sources said that it is likely that the president will follow the same route as in 1999 when the Constitution was held in abeyance and a provisional constitutional order (PCO) was promulgated to run the country. It has been learnt that PPP Chairwoman Benazir Bhutto is aware of these developments and that is why she left the country in a hurry. “The president held an important meeting on Thursday with his top military and intelligence aides to discuss the situation,” the sources said.

They said the president also discussed the overall security situation with the PML leadership including Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. “The issuance of the PCO is being discussed as a middle way to avoid martial law and emergency,” the sources said. After the intervention, General Musharraf will run the country with the help of his governors and small neutral cabinets. The elections may be scheduled anytime from February to April next year.

I think it will not be easy for Musharaf to bring PCO this time because if it was that easy he would have done it already....there was no need to do this topi drama....something is holding him back.....may be lack of consensus amongst top military brass as they are not happy with their new found popularity amongst the massses just for one man's lust for power...may be external pressure....but Iam sure there is something.....

With BB out of picture as PPP CEC already suggested her not to come back from Dubai, NS already not in a position to pose any threat....still Musharaf can not afford to go to elections as with his and Q league's popularity rating it will require massive rigging in next general elections and I don't think elections are an option available to the General as he will be facing a lot of criticism from all over the world....theoratically what is he waiting for to bring PCO as it is the only option available if he has to survive in power....he would have done it long time back.....but really something is holding him.

I think as a last resort he is just pressurising everybody with these empty threats....
