Emergence of "Super Universities" in the UK

Manchester and UMIST are thinking of merging into a “super university”, as are Imperial and UCL…it seems the real top unis here are all in the process of merging with another to boost themselves.

Is this limited to the UK, or does the US too have mergers?

The ppl at Imperial-UCL even say the move would “create a University unmatched in the UK”…

Its on all the relevant sites, under info for this bit.

What will this do for higher education in the UK, will we see an aparthied (sp?) of university education, with a select band breaking away and the remainder being forced into an almost “sub-standard” degree education?

I have just been reading up on this UCL-IC proposed merger, it would, to paraphrase the Economist (www.economist.com) creat a instituation with more academic clout then either Oxford or Cambridge.

All the surces available online say it would have a research budget of over £400million, thats more then Oxford/Cambridge/Harvard and almost anything else. Only Stanford (apparently) comes close. This would shake the academic world thru to its feet, and with one swoop bring the pinnacle of higher education away from the US Ivy League and firmly back into the UK. Nothing in the world would be able to compete with such a university, it would attract the top everyting from across the globe.

A decision on merger will be taken on December 19th-and if approved the detauils of it will be planned out for propsed union by 2004!

That means I'd have to get into this place for a MA if I was to plan to do one! It has given me a new aim in life. :)
