Embarrassing question but need clarification!

I was talking to a friend of mine who is a muslim but wasnt sure on the following. This is embarrassing to ask this but i just need clarification please.

After intercourse, people need to perform a ghusl/shower etc. In terms of women, do they have to wash their hair too? I have been informed that water needs to reach the root of the hair? Is this true?

Should you have a ghusl straight after or can you wait?

I am sorry that i have to ask this but i am getting mixed opinions. Can someone help?

Only serious replies please!

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

yes, water shud reach the root of the hair....

and yes, if u do wudoo u can postpone the ghusl till later....

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 5, Number 248
Narrated 'Aisha:
Whenever the Prophet took a bath after Janaba he started by washing his hands and then performed ablution like that for the prayer. After that he would put his fingers in water and move the roots of his hair with them, and then pour three handfuls of water over his head and then pour water all over his body.

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 5, Number 285
Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab:
I asked Allah's Apostle "Can any one of us sleep while he is Junub?" He replied, "Yes, if he performs ablution, he can sleep while he is Junub."

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

Ok i may sound dumb but what is janub or janaba?

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

No its not an embarrassing question.

*Dear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum. What is the significance of making *ghusl (bathing the whole body) after sexual intercourse? Jazakum Allah khayran. **

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

*All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger. *

Dear sister in Islam, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake.

First and foremost, we would like to stress the fact that Islam is the religion of cleanliness. Islam requires a person to pay considerable attention to his personal hygiene and cleanliness. The Qur’an says: "Truly Allah loves those who turn unto Him, and loves those who have a care for cleanness." (Al-Baqarah: 222) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) states: "Cleanliness is half of faith."

In his response to the question you raised, Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, former President of the Islamic Society of North America, states:
"This ghusl is called *ghusl al-janabah* according to the Shari`ah. It is obligatory to take a full bath after sexual intercourse or ejaculation (i.e. in a wet dream or if sperm comes out due to sexual desire, also sexual dream and discharge in the case of women). This is mentioned in the Qur’an and the Sunnah. The purpose of this bath is to clean the body and refresh the spirit. Sexual emission is not just an ordinary matter like urination or defecation. When it happens, the whole body, mind and spirit get involved in it. After it, one feels lazy and dull. The full shower makes a person fresh in body and spirit. There are many spiritual as well as physical and medical benefits in it. But for a Muslim, it is the command of Allah and His Messenger and it must be followed."

*Scholars of Islam, as-Salamu `alaykum. What is the proper way to bathe and purify the body after having wet dreams? *

Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

“The proper method of ghusl (ritual bath) involves the following steps:

  1. Make the niyyah (intention) to perform ghusl for purification.

  2. Wash your private parts thoroughly with water.

  3. Perform wudu’ (ablution) except for washing of your feet, which you can do later while bathing the body.

  4. Wash the entire body, starting with your head and the right side, followed by the left.

  5. It is preferred that the whole body be washed three times. The minimum is once.

Having completed the above, you are considered eligible to perform the salah (prayer).”

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

Should you have a ghusl straight after or can you wait?

What I've heard is that you need to wash your private parts quickly after the sexual intercourse and then you can go to sleep and before salaat al fajr you perform ghusl. And Allah knows best.

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

Thank you so much for your informative answer Hareem. Much appreciated.

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

Janaba is the situation when ghusl becomes obligatory upon you. when you have intercourse with your wife or ejaculate semen (maniy) in other cases i.e. wet dreams.

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

Whilst there is a thread open on the subject, is there an islamic view on "na paak" clothing etc?

For example, the changing of bedlinen.

Once I was involved in a conversation and several people said, that like me, they change the bedlinen as soon as it becomes napak, however one lady said that she does not, and in fact will even use it for several days before it is changed. She insisted that this was fine as long as she did not come into contact with it, and as long as she showered everymorning, whether she is in state of janabah or not.

I thought that all na paak clothing and bedlinen had to be washed straight away otherwise there is no barkat in the house?

Does anyone have any quotes I can use in my argument?

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

Does that mean that your salat is not valid either once you have slept in the same bedlinen and even once you have had your shower etc?

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

No, I think if as long as you take a shower and perform Wuzu, you're salat will be valid as long as you don't come into contact with the "dirty" bedlinen again.
For example, if you're bedding is napak, then you should not put anything on the bed (eg clothes that you will wear), or sit on the bed after you have performed wuzu as you will become napak again/the things you out on the bed will become napak.

I hope that this is true as this is how I practice......anyone, please feel free to correct me!

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

according to hanafi school of though semen is not na-paak....
which means if u just scratch it off from the place when it is dry, u wont need to wash it even to make the cloth paak....
ofcourse it needs to be washed if still wet....

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

If napaki is not visible or it has dried up and cannot get transfered to your clothing the behavior of that lady is right. Think about it you can perform teamum' ( dry wudu) off of a dry surface as long as you do not see any napaki sticking to that surface.
There is so much hearsay in Muslim communities because people do not have time to look into the books themselves therefore some people will just use common sense and speculate.

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

But, I am so paranoid, I just wouldn't be satisfied with doing this.
Maybe it's just me.....

If the bedlinen gets left for longer than necessary, I am just so paranoid all the time, like if I come to work without having had the chance to put the washing on...............

So, maybe someone could post the basics of paki/na paki in these instances??

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

Whatever you are doing is for your own stisfaction and there is nothing wrong with what you are doing. I would do the same. You have gotten the Islam's point of view re. basics of paki and napaki.

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

^In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

You don’t necessarily need to wash the duvet, bed sheets, and pillow cases following conjugal relations with your spouse unless, of course, you are certain that semen has fallen on them and you are using the same for Prayer, in which case you need to wash the same or at least the spot of semen that has come in contact with. Should it be dry, however, it can be scraped off, though washing it is preferred.

If, on the other hand, you don’t suspect that semen has fallen on the duvet or bed sheets, then you need not worry. For according to the principles of jurisprudence, we are to assume that things are pure unless proven otherwise.

Having said this, however, I must point out the following: It is generally assumed that the married couple engaging in sexual intercourse make use of some piece of cloth or tissues to wipe their genitals clean following the act. Otherwise, it is more than likely that semen drops may fall on the bed sheets, in which case one must wash them before using the same for Prayers.

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

Thanks, this helps understand things.

Also, what if the couple were to sleep in the bed overnight in the state of janabah, albeit that there were no staining, I assume that the whole bedding become classed napak?

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

Jazzak Allah Hareem. Ameen.

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

If there weren't any staining then no, it won't make the whole bedding napak, just make sure that the couple has cleaned their private parts after the intercourse and before sleeping then there won't be any doubt in bedding getting napak with discharge.

Re: Embarrassing question but need clarification!

Clothes that are napak and are wet and the wet part comes into paak clothes then they become napaak.
Well thats is my understanding!
