Embarassing....very embarrasing.../World Cup final officials punished

When the general public knows more about the ICC rules than the match referee, there is only one word to describe it…EMBARASSING.

Jeff Crowe should not resign…he should drown himself in* chullu bhar paani*

Any do takee kaa fan who has been following the World Cup knows that if the team batting second has batted for 20 overs, there is no way the game can continue on the next day in the event of interruption(eg due to rain, bad light etc).

It was ridiculous that the Sri Lankan team were told that they would have to continue batting next day when they had already batted for 33 overs. The game should have been over right then and there…instead the Sri Lankans were made to bat in darkness because they did not want to come back the next day.

And this is the World Cup Final we are talking about…simply ridiculous.

Re: Embarassing....very embarrasing...

^ So true

It was a farce

It's like a policeman not knowing the penalty for a speeding offence!

Even Rudi seemed totally ignorant about the rules, apparently insisting on the players coming back to finish the remaining three overs the following day!

I actually think 20 overs is a joke esp. for such an important game as a World Cup Final.

On a side note I think a minimum of 30 overs should constitute a game, 20 overs is a bit harsh on the team batting second. You don't need to be an Einstein to see that it gives a distinct advantage to the team batting first (on top of D/L rule that favours the team batting first in most instances any way) simply because there's almost always more pressure on the batsmen while chasing a target than setting one (unless you implode like a pack of cards like Pakistan (1999 WC Final) or SA (2007 WC S/F)

Re: Embarassing....very embarrasing...

err....Elite Umpires ? more like Elite Dummies....

Re: Embarassing....very embarrasing...

thanks God our paki brother aleem dar told the players what was going on

Re: Embarassing…very embarrasing…

He told them that officals, himself included dont know the rules so they can go and play 3 more overs in pitch dark or come back the next day to play those 3 overs. :halo:

Re: Embarassing....very embarrasing...

man bucknor don't know what he's doing.......... looks dull and dumb whenever you see his face

Re: Embarassing....very embarrasing...

I am disappointed in Aleem and Steve for giving in to the moron Rudi. ALeem and Steve should have over ruled Rudi's bakwaas. Rudi should retire.

Re: Embarassing....very embarrasing...

what are u talking about? they didnt give into Rudi...rudi suggested they will continue play tomorrow. dar (bucknor) said lets do 3 overs now. they all are idiots, if rudi should retire, all these idiots should retire...made a mockery of a world cup final...

Re: Embarassing…very embarrasing…

:lahol: It was a total stupidity from the match officials .Imagine that match going for the next day

Re: Embarassing…very embarrasing…

Inside this link, the graphic that has been posted of the two captains, the reserve umpire and an on-field umpire, how unfortunately dark it is. Good Lord, how can anyone spot anything in this darkness? They showed us the view from the stump cam, and it was nothing but pitch dark. Commentators were forced to view the proceedings from their TV monitors. This picture just gives another indication of how miserable the playing conditions were. I thought Ireland had the the worst when they had to bat under near darkness while facing pace battery from our camp. Both these incidents take the cake.

On an unrelated note, the speech made by Percy Sonn at the awards ceremony was so ridiculously monotonic. It was so bizarre to note the reaction of the crowd while watching a robot-like figure on our screens. Even robots have emotions and feelings programmed into them. ICC, do they even qualify as humans?

Re: Embarassing....very embarrasing...

Now Imagine....if this world-cup had happened in South Asia --- Australian and British media along with gora ICC would have torn us apart.

Starting from Woolmer murder, poor infrstructure and overall management of this whole event--everything has only exposed ICC.

Come 2011 and you will see all possible kind of concerns (security included) will be heard from goras.

Re: Embarassing…very embarrasing…

** Two long months of playing the fool ****- ****Mark Nicholas

** The World Cup finished much as it began, in disarray. From the very real tragedy of Bob Woolmer’s death to the superficial one of a final played out in pitch black to a full house that could no longer identify the players, never mind understand the revised rules, cricket has appeared as a fool too often to be funny.

** Someone, somewhere, must be accountable, but won’t be. The International Cricket Council are not a federation governing the game; they are a holding company who facilitate the egos of each member nation. In time, there will be a meeting, some platitudes, even a promise about the future, but the truth is that everyone is in it for themselves, not for the greater good. One day this will come home to roost, for cricket is on a collision course with a world that offers myriad simpler options.** For the moment, we are left to celebrate one exceptional team while reflecting on the incompetence that surrounds them…

Re: Embarassing....very embarrasing...

Even though Speed and Crowe have owed up to the mistake. Even though Rudi is singled out as the culprit by ICC. I am still aghast that Aleem Dar ruined his reputation here. Very unfortunate. Bucknor is an old geezer and I don't feel very highly about his umpiring abilities either. But Aleem Dar??? Shoot, man, what were YOU thinking...???

Re: Embarassing…very embarrasing…

Kind of sums it up …
Ponting’s reaction:

“I actually thought he (the umpire) was having a bit of a joke with us to try and stop our celebrations or something. He said ‘it looks like you’ll have to come back tomorrow and play three overs’. I stopped and looked at him and said ‘mate, we’ve played the 20 overs, we’ve finished the game’. It was a little bit disappointing way to end a World Cup” – Australian captain Ricky Ponting reacting to the farcical end to the tournament following his team’s 53-run win.](http://www.supercricket.co.za/default.asp?id=5300&des=sportstalk)

Re: Embarassing…very embarrasing…

yes even tho they completely forgot the most obvious rules, when ponting explained it to aleem dar, it should have clicked in his head…

Re: Embarassing…very embarrasing…

Good move by the ICC.
Unlike the Desi tendency to sweep past mistakes under the carpet (esp if its out of the public mind)…the Aussie (Malcolm Speed) is setting a good example…that professional lapses will result in consequences.

World Cup officials slammed by ICC
June 22, 2007

http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/twenty20wc/content/current/story/299277.html
The International Cricket Council has delivered a humiliating punishment on the five match officials whose combined errors caused the World Cup final in Barbados to be completed amid farcical scenes of near-darkness.

The two onfield umpires, Steve Bucknor and Aleem Dar; the reserve umpires Rudi Koertzen and Billy Bowden, and the match referee, Jeff Crowe, have all been suspended for the duration of the next ICC event, the Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa in September.

“It would have been easy to let sleeping dogs lie and pretend nothing happened,” said Malcolm Speed, the ICC’s chief executive. “But the reality is that the playing control team made a serious and fundamental error that caused the final of our flagship event to end in disarray and confusion.”

The World Cup, which had already been dogged by poor crowds, bad publicity, and one-sided cricket, not to mention the lingering shadow of Bob Woolmer’s death in Jamaica, desperately needed a successful final between Australia and Sri Lanka to salvage some respect.

Instead, it got the most farcical finish of all time. With the match already all but decided in Australia’s favour, Sri Lanka conceded defeat in rapidly fading light. They were down to their tail-enders and still needed 63 runs from the remaining 18 balls of the innings, but the five officials ruled that the teams would have to return to complete the match the following day, even though the minimum 20 overs in the second innings had already been bowled.

After a lengthy delay, Mahela Jayawardene agreed to send his batsmen back out to face Australia’s spinners, and the game was completed in the dark with a cacophony of boos ringing around the ground. An apologetic Crowe immediately took the blame as manager of the playing control team, but following a review by the ICC’s cricket manager, Dave Richardson, it was decided that further censorship was called for.

“That was not acceptable for such experienced and talented officials,” added Speed. “Although we do not like to have to take such action, we felt it was necessary to decline to appoint them for our next event, the ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa. We feel that to stand them down for this two-week tournament is a proportionate measure.”
Reacting to the decision, Crowe said: "While it is never easy to take criticism, I think it is right that there are consequences for our actions as match officials. In this instance I understand that the ICC could not merely let it go.

“We set ourselves high standards as match officials and at the end of that day we did not reach those standards. It was not a pleasant experience for us but hopefully now we can look forward and learn from it.”

The appointments of match referees and umpires for the Twenty20 Championships will be made and announced in due course. The tournament, involving the ten ICC Full Members, as well as Kenya and Scotland, is scheduled to take place at three venues - Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg - between September 11 and 24.

Re: Embarassing....very embarrasing...

some1 while I appreciate what you are saying don't get so carried away by that hawk Speed 'setting a good example'. I am not one to believe in conspiracy theories but I am pretty sure it would NOT have come to this if Taufel or any other Aussie had been one of the officials.

Re: Embarassing....very embarrasing...

Eventhough the punishment came late but unfortunately they all deserved it. Had it been a smaller stage they could have escaped it. And I think once ICC decided for the punishment, they would have punished any other umpire as well, even an Aussie.

Re: Embarassing....very embarrasing...

If Taufel had been one of the officials, he'd probably not be so bone-headed in that situation, I agree. Each and everyone of these 5 people, including our darling Aleem Dar, acted extremely stupidly and deserve every bit of this punishment meted out to them. I am surprised ICC did not dock them their match fees or something.

Re: Embarassing....very embarrasing.../World Cup final officials punished

The right decision by ICC for once. we need to get off this horse that umpires are god and nothing should be said against them. They deserved it for making a mockery of the final.
